What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Not for the faint-hearted but very cathartic...

My very first listen of this e.s.t. album recorded in 1998.

It's also my first listen to them on CD format which i'm enjoying immensely, and not any less than any of my collection of e.s.t. on vinyl : )

This is an interpretation I favour very much. Many of the movements in these suites lend themselves so well to the viola da gamba, that one may get the idea, that the gamba was instrumental (pun intended) in Bach´s creative process.

I think this is a nice and very well executed HIP version of the work. But I miss some of the innate drama and urgency of the music, at least as I hear it. The organ version of Helmut Walcha ( DG/Archive) expresses all this, even if it is a bit oldfashioned stylistically.

Hello Poul,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've added him to my list of follow-ups, together with a couple of string quartets.

Probably his best. Nice transparent recording too. You can hear the studio ambience. G

This is a compilation album released for the US market. It sources music from two of their best albums From Gargarins Point of View and Good Morning Susie Soho, both must haves in any EST collection.

La nuit de mai is a symphonic poem for voice and orchestra, almost a string of opera arias, really. Domingo isn't required to go high, and I wouldn't be able to think of a better singer to tackle these works.

Cheers,

Just put on my double vinyl version for what is my 2nd listen - i'm fairly sure it's going to remain my least favourite e.s.t. album

The usual fine e.s.t. performances but unfortunately [imo] mingled with over-long repetitive boring bits, and i admit to not understanding anything musically appreciating in machine-gun drumming.

This is definitely a listen to free before you spend money on buying album.

Maisky's first recording of the Bach suites. Already a musician with a strong mind at this time, but these performances are nowhere near as eccentric as his later recording, also for DG.

Kevin - if you don't mind me asking, where did you source this? All my Led Zep CDs are poor or just about ok. I'd love to get some decent ones.

MDS

Hi MDS

I got the set about 6 months ago from Pop Market for £77, which is great value. The packaging is great, with the kind of attention to detail found in the Beatles Mono CD box of 2009.

It comes up on Pop Market every three or four months or so and is well worth getting.

You also get all six sleeves for ITTOD and the "turquoise" sleeve for LZ1.

Very many thanks, Kevin. I've taken the plunge and am told it will arrive on Tues or Weds. Have paid rather more than you did but if this CD set allows me to properly enjoy Led Zep again as I used to when I had it all on vinyl I shall regard it as money well spent.

MDS

Did you buy from Amazon MDS? (Or an Amazon reseller?) - be aware that there are counterfeits out there, so if the print/packaging quality is not top-notch, or if there are any typos, send it back - you'll have an inferior-sounding fake...

Thanks for the tip, Kevin.  I've checked my Amazon order and it tells me the set is sold by Skyvo-direct.  I'll check the printing as you suggest.

MDS

Picked up this up from Post Office today and just unpacked it. Wow, the attention to detail in the packaging is a joy. Each CD cover is a mini-version of the original LP sleeve, even down to the inner sleeve for the CD itself.

Spoilt for choice as to what to listen to first but went straight to Physical Graffiti and selected Kashmir. Why? Well on every CD recording of this song I've got or heard it is bl**dy awful and unlistenable.

And this one?  Ooooooh.  That's the song I love!   I've got Led Zep back again and I'm going to really enjoy working my way through this lot.

So very, very, many thanks, Kevin, for highlighting this set, and to Blueknowz for pointing me to where I could get it.

Glad you're enjoying it MDS. Sounds like you have a proper copy and not a counterfeit if the sleeve quality is good.
