What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Picked up this up from Post Office today and just unpacked it. Wow, the attention to detail in the packaging is a joy. Each CD cover is a mini-version of the original LP sleeve, even down to the inner sleeve for the CD itself.

Spoilt for choice as to what to listen to first but went straight to Physical Graffiti and selected Kashmir. Why? Well on every CD recording of this song I've got or heard it is bl**dy awful and unlistenable.

And this one?  Ooooooh.  That's the song I love!   I've got Led Zep back again and I'm going to really enjoy working my way through this lot.

So very, very, many thanks, Kevin, for highlighting this set, and to Blueknowz for pointing me to where I could get it.

MDS

Glad you're enjoying it MDS. Sounds like you have a proper copy and not a counterfeit if the sleeve quality is good.

I think so, Kevin. For example, the inner sleeves have one semi-circle end to hold the CD snugly. Suspect counterfeiters wouldn't go to such lengths.  Cheers. MDS

The Band. Greatest Hits. Remastered CD from 2000. A very good sounding remaster and a nice selection of songs.

Being honest Matt I don't like it but I am not a great fan of hers. I loved the first album and her Dusty Springfield cover set but nothing else.

Ravel String Quartet in F Major: Guarneri Quartet

This new pressing is beautifully performed and nicely produced. One of the better digital reissue.

I hope this record label Lancer Media release more gem like this vinyl in the future.

On an original A1 plum label.

Quite hard to describe what makes Repin's Brahms Op.77 so compelling. Part of the reason must surely be the excellent recording (much better than DG gave Batiashvili/Thielemann), which is gorgeously deep and dynamic, although the soundstage has limited depth. Repin plays with power and drama, but also with finesse. Chailly's Gewandhausorchester provides a big-boned but clearly delineated foil for Repin. The Heifetz cadenza fits well in this performance and allows Repin to let loose for a few minutes before he's picked up by Chailly again.

Cheers,

EJ

Hi James

Agreed, I think all his albums are great.  I did not care for him live (twice) but find little to fault in his recorded output.
