What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

fatcat,

Is that a good pressing?

Wouldn't like to say. I have the small semi circle pressing and don't know how it compares to others.

The cello concerto sounds OK to me, but I'm no expert.

Don't listen to Sea Pictures, don't really like it.

The Beatles. Rubber Soul. On Capitol vinyl with Apple label from 1969.

Note the olive colored lettering on the US version, which contains only 12 tracks; 'Drive My Car' and 'If I Needed Someone' omitted.

Recording was completed 48 years ago this month then mixed and in shops in time for Christmas.

Jimmy Buffett. Son of a Son of a Sailor. On vinyl from 1978.

I've recently gained an appreciation of Jimmy's talents as a songwriter and performer. His band is tight. His music is well recorded. And the songs are easily to like.

With accolades from Martha Argerich and others on how Trifonov is the best pianist of our time blablabla, I tried to listen with an open mind, focusing on the Liszt sonata. And what I hear is an impressive diamond in the rough, with room to grow. The Liszt sonata is part I of the substantial main course of this recital: Trifonov starts of a bit shaky and grows to impressive quality, and he structures it well. He is evidently modeling Zimerman with a bit of Pogo's contrasts sprinkled on top, although he doesn't match their phrasing and sense of direction. I hope he revisits this work at a later stage, when he's had time to let his ideas sink in.

So, as a CD, maybe not one for the library although I for one am glad to have this and plan to return to it ocassionally. Sound quality is good with a quiet audience, applause after Prelude #28 and the encore is included. It'll be interesting to see where Trifonov is heading next.

Cheers,

EJ

If he come to the essential point of the music as G. Sokolov he could be one of the great pianist of our time.
