What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

So far today:

Band of Horses - Infinite Arms

Land of Talk - Applause Cheer Boo Hiss

Superchunk - Majesty Shredding

-I got the Band of Horses album back in 2011, based on many recommendations here.  The first listens were underwhelming, and it went on the shelf.  I gave it a listen this week and have played it probably 4+ times in the last few days.  I finally get it.    Will look into other albums in their catalog.

Have you seen Danny Macaskill's video on YouTube, entitled 'inspired Bicycles'? It uses the Band of Horses song 'Funeral' which fits the video perfectly. It's a good song and some scary bike riding!

I think the song appears on the album 'Everything All the Time'.

Krystian Zimerman combines vision with tenderness, power, clarity and a varied tonal palette - a hugely impressive performance and one of my desert island discs.

Thanks for the suggestion, Clive.  Awesome riding!  The song does fit perfectly.  I had heard "Funeral" before, but didn't know the name or artist.  Thanks!

Time to check out more of Danny's videos.

Hi EJ,

If it's your disc for an island, then I would like to get it as well. Your recommendations have been quite good so far.

Cheers,

Bert

Spaciously recorded, this 1984 Manon Lescaut lacks the immediacy of other recordings, but it is one of the best sung and best conducted versions on record. Mirella Freni sounds a size too small for the finale but is otherwise in great shape. (She would later sing it even better for Levine, on Decca.)

Cheers,

EJ

Bert, absolutely recommended but I have to warn you that my island is fairly well stocked with CDs

Pleased you're enjoying them. Until you arrived I had forgotten I had those duplicate LPs. I know they went to a good home.
