What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Horowitz Plays Chopin: Volume 2

To be honest I like the old Horowitz more - the younger one is a bit too efgy in his playing style...

Masterful performances of Prokofiev's #2 and Ravel's piano concerto for two hands.

Over the years, Nikolai Lugansky has added a weighty spaciousness, calm, effortless quality to his playing, using his technical arsenal as a means to an end. These qualities define his most recent disc as well: supported by Nagano, this isn't a barnstorming version of the Grieg, but a warmly glowing, highly polished account, played with wide dynamic range. With its urgency factor toned down, I think this becomes a much more interesting work. Prokofiev's 3rd is one of his most lyrical and accessible works, and also receives the luxury treatment. With his clear finger work, powerful playing and varied touch, Lugansky adds a depth to this work that I didn't know existed.

The recording is excellent with only minor tendency to clog up in tutti, both in 24/192 as in 16/44. Highly recommended.

Cheers,

EJ
