What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Well, I knew there was one landmark album in the 90's, Tony. I was just noticing that you used the plural "landmark albums"

Yeah, they were OK but it took a bullet to make them really famous.

Harnoncourt/Vienna Phil Bruckner 9th.

Still taking it in but this is one of the best sounding SACD/DSD hybrid disc I have heard.

Celibidache/SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Bruckner 9th.

There used to be very little of his *Kosher* recording made whilst he was alive due to his hate for recorded music except for poor illegally recorded live discs . After his passing, there have been some good releases made by major label. This Bruckner box set is one of them.

This is a 1974 live analogue recording and it's on a CD for the first time. Overall well balanced, it's not the best fidelity, but considering, I think the engineer did a fairly good job.

It's personal and emotional approach with less theatrics ( within the reason, after all this is still Bruckner ).

Individual instruments are well separated adding more colourful side lines to the main story telling. There are lonely clarinets peaking out in the first movement I didn't even know existed. This is the first time the score has sufficient flesh on the bones to make up a complete story with a lot of filled in details. Celibidache gives each instruments the reasons for being there. Adagio isn't scary as Mravinsky's. There are no elements of fear, rather, this is about a man looking up to see the other side of the world. There is more emphasis on the sense of release for the end of one's life. Similar to Mozart's Jupiter. Celi's 9th, comparartively is more organic than I have heard so far.

Here's a fascinating interview of Celibidache on what he's trying to get at from listening to the music. He gets a bit verbose and pontificating but I sort of understand what he's getting at. Wish I could have attended one of his concert.

Recorded in Buenos Aires in April 2010, it features Santiago Vazquez on percussion, Edgardo Cardozo on guitar and vocals, Luciano Dyzenchauz on double bass, Lucas Nicotian on piano and accordion and Marcelo Moguilevsky on winds. This band of wizards produce an intoxicating blend of folklore, unique in its style and dexterity.
