What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

You are a God send Chief Chirpa.... but now I'm listening to Anna (thank you, than you !!!!) under some hypnotic force and beat that keeps repeating.. it is cratering my brain....it's gonna explode.

Excellent debut album, just listened back to back with Goldfrapp....see (hear) what you mean

voice is like 'Florence', or for us less young folks, a little 'Tzuke' ie.....

Have a listen.....

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the new Goldfrapp album. This is a tiny bit more percussion and instruments (not much) and her voice is reminiscent of Florence (Welch, of Florence and the Machine). The combination works very well and they have made some lovely melodies.

Patty Griffin "Impossible Dream"

Posted on: 30 November 2013 by Florestan
Sergei Prokofiev's Concerto for Piano No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16:  Andantino-Allegretto 1st movement only
Anna Vinnitskaya (Piano) / Gilbert Varga / Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin

Thanks to Chief Chirpa for saving me - musically that is.  Probably one of my favorite movements - period.  A desert island disc.  After retreating to the quiet of my home without added background soundtrack I am once again transported to a very pleasant place for the best therapy.  This g minor first movement is all I need and the first eleven minutes especially, minute by minute, just builds bit by bit into such a place that it physically makes it nearly impossible to keep my composure.  Another odd reason I suppose in the live vs. at home debate of where music is or should properly be listened to.  I don't think I could be in public during this performance by Anna yet this would be the ultimate dream - if I were the only one in the audience with a box of tissues.

Take your pick.  The score or the view of a musician who can pull this nearly impossible work off.  I tend to alternate between the two and will be with this for several more hours.

RE: Patty Griffin "American Kid"

Hi Graham

I have American Kid, as well.  I have loved PG since my first exposure to her around 2001.  I was fortunate to see her live around then in an intimate 600 seat theatre.  Spellbinding.  Crystalline.  It was amazing.

On that tour she had a wonderful guitar player - Doug Lancio - who produced her album 1000 Kisses.  One of the best support people I have ever seen.  He subtly highlighted her songs with 30-45 second solos that made the songs even more magical.  He plays with John Hiatt on the Open Road album - worth hearing.

Patty's band on American Kid is the Dickinson boys, Cody and Luther.  Their dad was a producer at Muscle Shoals and the boys regular band is the Mississippi All-Stars (who also backed John Hiatt on his  Master of Disaster album)

And not to forget, Patty shares vocals with Robert Plant on the Band of Joy album.

Her Children Run Through album is also a personal favorite.

regards

Jeff A

@Jeff Anderson.

Thanks for that, I have never had the opportunity to see Patty live but hope to catch her soon. If I had to chose my favourite PC album it would be 1,000 Kisses. By the way are you in the UK?

Regards Graham.

On CD and the music is good

Earlier:

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way    (SACD)

John Coltrane - Blue Train   (SACD)

Kenny Drew - Undercurrent  (XRCD)

Now:  Anat Cohen - Place & Time   (CD)

I think a few days ago someone was listening to her "Notes from the Village", which inspired this choice.

These Japanese CD versions are superb, packaging as well as sound quality. Reminds me of the impact and enjoyment this album gave me when it was released and I was a teenager playing it incessantly.
