What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Finally got my favourite Lenny's 9th with VPO on record.

This is not even the original pressing yet it's completely free of upper register congestion at dynamic peak.

Nicely done recording. It's an interesting contrast to Böhm set particularly with the same Vienna Phil Orchestra.

On vinyl :-

Totally smitten by this album; so unlike music I'd generally go for but can't stop playing it  and two wonderful slabs of heavyweight vinyl to boot!

Yes it's good, but sadly not mint. Looks original pre-barcode AMLH64906

Bought it a couple of days ago at a Town Centre Market stall [bagain bucket] for £2.

Lots of minor surface marks and scuffs, some noticable surface noise on lead-in & start of first track but gets better after a minute or so, and slight surface noise between tracks but easily hiden by musical sound with nice SQ.

Enjoyed my first listen very much, think it may sound better with a couple more plays - i find sometimes they need a few plays after a good tlc RCM scrub to take away 2 decades of neglect.

At the same time i also bought a copy of this-

double vinyl cleaned up well to ex+ condition, outer cover really tatty.

no idea what it's like yet,

but know it'll need to be played loud so i'll wait til tomorrow afternoon

Good luck with your hunt for a mint night and day : )

Debs

As a great Joe Jackson fan I've got both these albums; Night & Day's an early pressing & sounds excellent, but the live album's not such good sound quality, it's quite compressed. The CD sounds better for some reason.

I assume these are the Rhino remasters, which I think are very good (I think the Rhino version of Close to the Edge is better than Steven Wilson's recent remix). I wonder how often you'll play 'Drama' or 'Big Generator'?

Some great music on the other albums  though.

House to myself so this seemed appropriate.
