What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
Anyway, links:

At the same time i also bought a copy of this-
double vinyl cleaned up well to ex+ condition, outer cover really tatty.
no idea what it's like yet,
but know it'll need to be played loud so i'll wait til tomorrow afternoon

As a great Joe Jackson fan I've got both these albums; Night & Day's an early pressing & sounds excellent, but the live album's not such good sound quality, it's quite compressed. The CD sounds better for some reason.
Tony, my copy seems to oddy vary in compression from one side to another, fair to middling on side 1 & 3, with side 2 sounding really excellent, and side 4 very poor. I gave up on side 4 cos it also has an annoying crackle which i think is poor vinyl quality on the pressing : (
Side 2 is a blast however, interesting music mixes! : )

Particularly nice touch with this Japanese remastered CD is the revolving wheel in the cover, just like that in the original LP cover.
The Bach pieces are great - the Boulez pieces are not fitting within the context of the Bach pieces. A very bad taste of making this combination.

Split personality, the cover picture tell us all.
Definitely January weather outside (11F).
Yet again...
Streaming Fragile from "The Studio Albums 1969 -1987" 12 CD box set which arrived today, courtesy of those nice couriers Hermes.
I assume these are the Rhino remasters, which I think are very good (I think the Rhino version of Close to the Edge is better than Steven Wilson's recent remix). I wonder how often you'll play 'Drama' or 'Big Generator'?
Some great music on the other albums though.
Hi Clive. Yes Rhino remasters and sounding alright. I must admit to never having heard Steven Wilson's remix (boy is that guy a busy man!) As for "Drama" and "Big Generator" these are two albums I have not heard before so when I do it will be a first for me.

Pity that no more Minnesota orchestra. This is my first exposure to Osmo Vänskä's work and I am liking this set a lot. Clean, transparent and dynamic. Rhythmic and elegant. Less legato than Böhm. Reminds me of gust of Northern wind circling through the score.
This DSD hybrid SACD provides excellent instrument textures and colours even with my Red Book CD players.
On vinyl as God intended.

nothing too taxing for me tonight, Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions. Archive stuff.
One from the six album box set.
Sounds fab imo nothing not to like,
don't have an original LP to compare but i'm too busy enjoying to worry about that : )

Beautiful album.
Poor reissue by Flying Dutchman.

Love this album, Kuma. I have the original issue and played it a while ago. Pity they managed to mess up the reissue.

Nice Tony.
The mint US original is going for silly $$ on ebay and I haven't spotted the original issue locally.
There are several other reissues but this particular Flying Dutchman reissue has a lot of distortion in the midrange sounding like made from a 16/44 digital stamper. Add salt to an injury, it's off center hole.
I still enjoy this tune, tho.

Hi Denis
Thanks for that. Also got the Rael Jones recommend but only one listen so far. I think I will enjoy it and can't think of anything similar I have so nice to have the variety.
Thanks as always, be well, down to 10 degrees F in Pdx tonight, quite unusual. Brrrrrr.

Klemperer/New Philharmonia's Bruckner 9th.
Pity that the sound quality of this reissue CD ( note the Warner Logo instead of familiar EMI red logo on the box ) isn't doing justice for its splendid grandeur out of this world. Very long final movement but it's all justified to build the story.
