What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

... and earlier in the evening: the Hagen Quartett playing one of Beethoven's middle quartets and Schubert's last. Both are uncompromising works, and played as such by the Hagen - especially the Schubert is played with great flair and many interpretive touches that add character. Great performances.

Cheers,

EJ

Boston on vinyl from 1976, fresh off the record cleaning machine.

WOW! What a difference clean vinyl makes!

Everything just gets better...the soundstage, the bottom, the top, the depth.

Blueknowz,

This looks like a nice cast.  How's the SQ?  Typically, when they did these compilation LPs in the US they tried for a uniform sound from among the various artists and the result was a flat, dimensionless album.

Classy and more orthodox but there aren't much of humour or playfulness of his No.1.
The slow movement is played out rather cool and serious for Kempff. He even makes Backhaus a passionate piano player.
