What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

You really like him Jeff maybe I oughta give him another chance as I just couldn't get into his music.

Hi Ewen

I do like him a lot though I rarely drift to that pigeon-holed genre.

My first non-general media exposure to him was on a DVD of the Grammys honoring James Taylor roughly 8-10 years ago (ArtistCares fundraising extension of the Grammys and they honor someone each year with a big gala - JT's was on DVD)  He and JT's exceptional band covered a JT song and Keith just played some amazing guitar.  I bought a DVD of KU live in California and enjoy it very much and again the guitar fills, mostly all by KU, just hit the spot with me.  He is more than a pretty boy with a good band.  Have bought most of the back and new catalogue and enjoy it all.

Would never go see him live as the shows are way too large and I am no longer a fan of crowds (and, ah, people in general in most public situations in person).

Have never understood completely what strikes a chord with each of us with any given artist. And while sharing mutual interest in one artist never for sure portends mutual interest in another.  Makes for a wonderful variety though, and many good discoveries through the kindness of others here (like you).

Ah, remember this?
Why I must have been thirteen when this came out
Or was  it fourteen? Or was it twenty-two?
I could have been twelve actually

I heard the news from a class mate at school (on the third floor of block C in a now deconstructed building) when I was waiting for a German class to start.

A fantastic disc. Bejun Mehta is one of the few male altos with a truly beautiful, distinctive voice, well sized and agile (although on this evidence not the widest range compared to some of his peers), and on this album he uses it with great intelligence. I've never heard Gluck sung with more emotional investment than here, quite a revelation in music that so often sounds as stale as a three-day old baguette. And even more impressive, Mehta and Jacobs keep this up for the full duration of the disc. Recording is excellent (24bit aiff on usb stick).

Cheers

EJ

It's a beautiful album Jeff, completely different from his Prog band, Thumpermonkey . A few more play's and think you will like it too.

Rael is a talented guy - http://www.raeljones.com/index.php

Glad you saw the David Gray link as well from last night. I think I will look into his stuff, as I might have misjudged his music.

Keep warm,

More beautified and romantic than what I would care for.

Posted on: 08 December 2013 by Haim Ronen

Kuma, are you stuck on number 9?

Posted on: 08 December 2013 by Chris Dolan

On cheap 80's vinyl all sources tell me - but I rather like it

Posted on: 08 December 2013 by kuma

Haim yeah.

Will be hopping over to Schubert's 9th soon.

And now, Skorw's Bruckner 9th.
