What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

The last time I had a real extended time with the Grieg concerto was about two years ago with the excellent Stephan Hough Liszt / Grieg Concerto recording.  Maybe I left it too long but I simply enjoyed this new recording with Nikolai Lugansky.  Just what the doctor ordered and it appears my anemia has been solved for the day.  Enough that I listened to the Grieg four times tonight and the Prokofiev just once so far.  The playing is superb and the piano sound (Steinway, of course) here is approaching what I'd call nearly perfect.  Just listen to the low register notes on the Grieg.  It just makes me jump for joy.  I can never tire of great music but it needs inspired hands and just someone who might be willing to add their own brand of emotional capital to it - and this is a winning combination then.

Lugansky has reached a top Level from technical and intelectual pov

Interesting opinion, I also have to admit that I have more difficulty in appreciating his style. I would sometimes call it harsh..., let's see if others react.

Maybe enough has been said about the subject, this is all opinion after all and there's no accounting for taste... for myself, I remain fascinated by his pianism and uncompromising attitude to the works he plays. Going to see him in January in a Chopin / Debussy programme and hope I'll get the chance to shake his hand!

Rossini's William Tell, in its Italian translation done justice by an allstar cast. If there's anything to carp about, it's Chailly inexperienced direction - he's not bad but Pappano showed us how much more there is to this score - but the cast is unsurpassed. Pav reportedly considered this his best recording, and it's not hard to hear why he thought that. He makes short work of Arnold's stupendously difficult role, with its high tessitura and countless top notes. And like always, his voice merges beautifully with Freni's. Milnes in one of his last recorded roles (he would sing at the Met for another 20 years or so) is a noble William and the rest of cast is at the same level.

The opera is one of the first Grand Opéras, a very long, sprawling work not without its tedious moments - but one of Rossini's best.

One advantage of Amazon Prime is I received this yesterday Graham. Very good it is too. I preordered it and only paid £9.92. It's double that now. Result.

I've only listened to side 1 (El Amor Brujo), after a couple of minutes of side 2 my wife complained so much I thought it better to turn it off.

I liked El Amor Brujo, part of it reminded me of something else, possibly Bolero or rhapsody in blue.

Then: Live at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon 1974

Both ripped CDs. Why Caravan? Because I adore Caravan and the tickets arrived today for next March at the City Hall, Salisbury. Right now 'Virgin on the Ridiculous' is streaming - gorgeous!
