What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

My feeling exactly although I am too young to have ever been nowhere near there at the time, still I put on this one...

... David LaFlamme really knew his violin.

His Moonlight is one of my fave renditiong. ( I despise this tune due to overexposure over the years ) Kempff's playing is strangely comforting to me. Very simple and honest performance cut through to the core of the tune. He snucks in from the back door.

Alexander Schimpf (Piano)

Variations for Piano in C minor on an Original Theme, WoO 80 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Sonata for Piano no 28 in A major, Op. 101 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Préludes, Book 2 by Claude Debussy
Augenblicke - eine Sammlung, for piano by Adrian Sieber
Rondo for Piano no 3 in A minor, K 511 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Suite Iberia, Book 2: no 2, Almería by Isaac Albeniz

I generally prefer to mostly listen to sets of music by one composer at a time but I do make exceptions, especially when the recital is this good (save the Sieber as I'm not terribly fond of new music).  Everything else here is a highlight for me and very close to my heart.  The Beethoven Variations rate as one of my favourite pieces to listen to or to play.  The Mozart Rondo is simply spellbinding and Albeniz's Almería is also such a fantastic piece that leaves me only wanting more.

With this as my first exposure to Alexander Schimpf I am sold and believe he is a very fine pianist.

The three albums nominated for Grammy, category best rock album.

All 3 are excellent, but my vote goes to KoL's "Mechanicall Bull", because it's a perfect rock record. Bowie is also perfect, but not totally rock.

LZ is great, but Jimmy's solos are not very good here, although his guitar work is excellent otherwise.

Disclaimer: my opinion only.

Curved Air - Air Conditioning

Had this on Vinyl since '71, listening now on stream from a ripped CD. If ever there was an album crying out for remastering this could well be it.
