What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

After listening to a series of Grieg and Schumann piano concertos, I was struck again by the quality of this one. Back in the day, the album almost didn't get published as Philips thought it wasn't good enough - it took a fan petition to get it released and with Gramophone as a loyal supporter it got its fair share of promotion. It's now been overtaken by recent, flashier recordings, but I could happily live with this one (especially the Schumann, which is so difficult to get right).

Cheers,

EJ

Celebrated recordings of Beethoven's last five sonatas. I believe at Pollini's request, DG gave him a sound geared towards treble (with some peak distortion) but this re-release restored a bit of the balance and makes the recordings quite listenable (plenty of deep bass on my system). In 1976, Pollini's approach to Beethoven wasn't very different from his approach today - a singleminded, serious and long-lined vision, sustained by a concentrated intensity that doesn't leave much room for playfulness - although the early recordings show none of the breathlessness and rushed feeling that we now and then get from his more recent recordings (which add their own charm).

Cheers,

4 x LP box-set DG recordings (p) 1961/1962/1966 : )

I'd forgot how jolly good this set is,

and a perfect accompaniment to hear when ironing a king size duvet cover : )
