What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Kevin, hope you are well. This box does indeed look interesting. Inherited!

First listen! Mussorgsky's Pictures at/from an exhibition receives a performance that is characteristic of this pianist: transparent, considered with emotions held slightly in check, and a great feeling for the music's tension arch. As the pictures pass, it's clear that Osborne's goal is to slowly build a climax, culminating in a sonorous Gate of Kiev. His overall vision fits between Brendel (whose reading is more academic than this suite can handle, frankly) and Richter ('58 Sofia, whose level of intensity Osborne doesn't match). Eecommended!

Cheers,

EJ

BUDOS BAND.  All three of their albums are available on LP.  Their most recent album (BUDOS BAND 3) and I think all of them in fact were recorded live in a studio in Brooklyn using analogue tape!

Shostakovich playing own works. The pianism is much better than I expected, but I'm not sure (yet) about the merit of the piano concertos - there is a jealous / mocking quality about them that doesn't come across as very sympathetic first time round.

This, on the other hand, is very entertaining. Most of these works are probably not, or only partly, by Bach himself, but it's high quality. Oliva's flute and Hewitt's Fazioli blend together as if they were made for each other, and the recording captures them superbly.

Cheers,

EJ

Four sides of vinyl so far (New Orleans and Kansas City jazz). Very enjoyable - much music I hadn't heard before.
