What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

From last night..

On 45rpm vinyl.

Which prompted me to play this...

From my late fathers' collection, still sounding great!

Telemann's Overture Suite in D Major.

Surprisingly I am enjoying this. Excellent Archive Production's recording and production quality are  added bonuses.

Saw him at Cropredy a few years back and he was brilliant. The sound he gets from his home made instruments is unbelievable. Of course having John Paul Jones on bass didn't hurt either

Seasick Steve was on Letterman a few weeks back and he was brilliant there as well. Played "Cut My Wings" with only three strings. Well worth a listen, see it here:

Don,

That's so cool that JV listened to Carly. ( such a girly choice )

Yes, JV had some unusual ideas (for his time !) and tastes in music. He persuded me to buy an LP12 as well as the 12/160 and this record was one of several that helped demonstrate why the source was so important. His LP12/Rega Arm/Ortofon v my Pioneer PL12D (or possibly Rega Planar 2)/ShureM75 IIRC. His won !

 Don,

I bet it's all through the Briks/250?

On second thought on Carly LP:

I have been told, more than one occasion, if you want to get laid, play Carol King or Carly Simon.

Kuma, you are dead right, on both counts !

But on the hifi side, both passive and avtive set ups, and still the source won. He sold me the Briks a year or two later. And I still have them, somewhere!

...that makes two of us!  I have them all as well and besides the usual high quality of the performances (mostly) it is nice for me to hear some rare works / combinations that you wouldn't necessarily find elsewhere in the chamber world of recordings.

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Irma Issakadze (Piano)

Partita no 1 in B flat major, BWV 825
Partita no 2 in C minor, BWV 826
Partita no 3 in A minor, BWV 827
Partita no 4 in D major, BWV 828
Partita no 5 in G major, BWV 829
Partita no 6 in E minor, BWV 830

I didn't know what I wanted this morning other than something from the Bach keyboard works section.  This was a blind grab and it suits me perfectly fine...

Actually this was not as random as one would think.  I knew roughly already where to reach within a few degrees

Yes - no computers, no human-less involvement or mysterious sorting or random play, no software, no buttons were involved but only some fun before hand as I spent half an hour dithering around actually touching albums, pulling them out, reminding me of good memories long ago and somewhat planning the future listening plans today.  If I had everything ripped and all the albums in a box in the attic, yes, my life would be wholly simplified but I think I would be lost and certainly not as connected to my music.  Where is the fun or enjoyment in just randomly pushing a button without intention and being surprised?
