What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Janis possess both the iron fist control as well as flowing lyricism. Comparatively it does not have the sophisticated rhythmic elegance of Richter/Wislocki set but friendlier warmer disposition narrowly escaping the schmaltz status.

This original Living Presence Stereo recording is better than DG but Decca is still very much more open sounding.

Ashkenazy's Rach No.2. He has recorded this piece many times but this is the first European recording.

More decorative touches than Richter but not overly so. Not as serious or intense as Richter. Kondrashin's orchestration is lush but rhythmic with large sweeping scale. Comparatively, Wisloki's direction sounds minimalistic and barren. Finale sounds a bit light weight for piano but gorgeous orchestration making Dorati set sounds corny and garish.

The extra CD that came with the Frapp's "Tales of Us" Deluxe - very good stuff.
