What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Elbow "Dead In The Boot"

An album of B-sides and non-album releases.  I really

enjoy this band and think "Build A Rocket Boys", the release prior to this,

was one of the best releases in the past five years.  This is

a nice addition to the collection.

Johann Sebastian Bach:  Motetten BWV 225-230

Dorothee Mields, Robin Blaze, Hans Jörg Mammel, Peter Kooy, Collegium Vocale Gent, Philippe Herreweghe

Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, BWV 225

Komm, Jesu, komm!, BWV 229

Jesu, meine Freude, BWV 227

Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, BWV 230

Fürchte dich nicht, ich bin bei dir, BWV 228

Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf, BWV 226

I am not a fan of the digital age and you tube etc. by any means.  It seems to bring all the juveniles out of the woodwork.  Sifting through all the trash and trying to rid my eyes from the constant barrage of idiotic comments I have to stay focused on just what I need and then get out.  Otherwise it just gets depressing to believe these people might someday run the world.  With filters on, one can find some very useful applications around though.  Only recently I started seeing some of my favourite music with the score to follow along.  This is, to me, one of the most important and brilliant things in a long time and one of the few enlightenments or perks of the digital age for me

A nice example to follow the four and five part harmony of the score:

The music of Bach is eternal and simply affects me in a profound way.

I agree with you about the often silly, sometimes malicious comments that occur on youtube films. I tend to turn off the screen during the music to remove visual distractions ... I never read the commentaries these days!

I have just listened to Solomon's 1947 recording [EMI/HMV/Testament transfer] of Brahms' Second Piano Concerto to engage with similar wisdom found in the live one I posted the youtube of.

With music like this, there are many ways of revealing its greatness in performance, and these two performances share much, and yet differ in much as well. Both are fantastic, though!

Michael Stanley "Shadowland"

2010 release from heartland of america rock and roller,

Cleveland equivalent of Springsteen.  If you ever lived

on the north coast (south of the Great Lakes) you know

of everything Michael writes and sings.  Cover is his

son-in-law holding Michael's newborn grandson.

Art Blakey 'Moanin'. Analogue Productions 45rpm vinyl.

I think I was subliminally inspired to play this by my wife who has been trying to 'persuade' me to do various jobs in the house today.
