What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Some mellow tunes from our near-neighbour, Sarah. Perhaps not the most challenging of music in some ways, but she has a voice like an angel.

The Mendelssohn is good but there are so many good performances... but the Schumann is unique. A tough concerto without the immediate appeal of the famous romantic concertos, which Capucon gets absolutely right.

Robert Schumann:

Carnaval op. 9

Intermezzi op. 4

Franz Liszt:

Sonata in b minor, S 178

SOPHIE PACINI (piano)

Fantastic playing here.  One need not really read about her connection with Martha Argerich to understand the similarities of the two - typically incisive, clever and highly charged - always ready at the draw to release those spurts of energy at will and consistently in abundance.  While heavily leaning to and relying on adventurous characteristics of playing this is all at the expense of a more staid or reflective vision.  Fortunately, I can find that elsewhere to satisfy those cravings and leanings in the other direction when they come.

While only after my first listen, I am a little reluctant to mention recording quality since I'm just the sort that is rarely happy with the majority of recordings.  I was going to say that while the interpretation is very nice I find the recording quality a little uneven.  Actually, from the first note of the Schumann, I had my reservations and was a little disappointed but after the Liszt, I am starting to warm up to it.  Either Naim gear is temperamental or the recording quality changes from the Schumann to the Liszt?

Jefferson Airplane.  Surrealistic Pillow.  On vinyl from 1967.  Captures that summer of love sound.  I'll never tire of Grace Slick belting out White Rabbit.
