What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Haim,

if AliaVox, we should quote the three excellent Folia CDs of course.

Very strong reference discs/performances.

First stream and a good first impression ......

Worth listening to.

Not too keen on the order on the disk, esp. the Schubert following the Scriabin.

First spin. As on the cover, this starts with the cello concertos of Elgar and Carter, and the disc concludes with Bruch's Kol Nidrei. Surprisingly there aren't that many recordings of the Bruch, and my favorite performance goes back a long way, to Casals in primitive sound. Compared to him, Weilerstein takes it cool and gives the impression to underplay, but as the short work progresses, it becomes clear that she aims for a simpler sort of lyricism. The Elgar receives a fine performance, too 0 less heart-on-sleeve than Du Pre but harrowing in its own, more subdued, way. Carter's concerto concerto, dating from 2000, is a strange animal, which I don't get yet. However, all in all a very enjoyable disc!

Cheers,

EJ

Buddy Holly. A Rock & Roll Collection. 2 LP set from 1980.

I've got several Buddy Holly compilations on CD so I was pretty excited this weekend to find this on vinyl.  I think it has the nicest SQ of the bunch and a good selection of his songs.

Thanks EJ, you saved me the trouble of posting this too.  I pulled this out of the mail tonight and was the first thing on after the shoes came off.  I agree with your assessment too!!
