What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hook,

I did not think this was available on vinyl until March?

Richard

Hi Richard -

Feb 18 was the date I had seen, but much to my surprise, one of my local record shops had it on the shelf yesterday.  After a couple of spins through, I like it better than anything he's done since Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus.

Also, not too many songwriters can get away with rhyming "Hannah Montana" and "African savannah"!  :-)

ATB.

Hook

Hook,

You are right just looked up my order and it is due for despatch on 18th Feb.....

One of the most influential albums of the 1980s. Was reminded of it by hearing a random reference to Ash Ra Tempel:

Kevin,

I love some of the albums you've posted today. You've certainly got some style.

Dreadful cover, but an ace album by Irmin Schmidt and Bruno Spoerri (1981).

After 9 months without vinyl, a good recording was a nice way start...

A&M SPJ-3647 (Pressed in Japan) A&M Records Of Canada. Picked this up a long time ago @ Bristol Hi-Fi show. Should sound even better in a couple of weeks when I get my HiCap DR.

Last one for today. Great CD of Mancini cover versions by former members of Tom Waits' band and Matt "Son of Dave" Brubeck.

Just wonderful.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Self-titled debut on vinyl from 1976.  From Shelter Records and distributed by ABC so it's an original release, but not sure if it's a first pressing.  Sounds good enough to me though.

The Best of Tacet 2008 (180g vinyl):

1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:  Sonata in A minor KV 310 (300d), 1st movement Allegro Maestoso

2. Frederic Chopin:  Nocturne B flat minor op. 9 No. 1

3. Franz Liszt:  La Campanella

4. Ludwig van Beethoven:  Sonata A major op. 2 No. 2, 4th movement, Rondo. Grazioso

5. Ludwig van Beethoven:  Sonata D major op. 31 no. 2, “Sturm-Sonate”, 3rd movement, Allegretto

6. Franz Liszt:  Zwei Konzertetuden, “Gnomenreigen” in F sharp major

7. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:  Trio in B flat major KV 502, 1st movement, Allegro

8. Johann Sebastian Bach:  Suite III B mino BWV 814, Sarabande

My favourite medium is vinyl since, to my ears, it comes the closest to the real thing usually.  Warm, realistic and beautiful.  The problem is that there are not enough recordings available of the music I want on vinyl.  Even though this album is limited by only giving samples it is quite wonderful to give me a taste of what I'm missing.

Very different from his earlier Version. Richter is casual but more reserved and less passion.
Sound wise, it is a vast improvement from the earlier Russian recording but not as good as his later EMI pressing with Matačić set.

Irony is that I like the crappy sound Russian performance ( Gauk/USSR State Radio Orchestra ) the best.

This is a win win situation,

fabulous composition,

fantastic harpsichordist,

superb SQ vinyl.

Last track played on two harpsichords - a little bit exhibitionist feeling; otherwise outstanding record.

Sound quality is AMAZING.

What better music to listen to on a snowy morning in London, than some more faux-Polynesian exotica?
