What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Steve,

I have not listened to the whole album, just side 1&2 . Side one finds RT in a folk sort of groove which I did not expect . Side 2 is typical RT. My pressing is v good flat & with no surface noise SQ does not sound to digital. So what I have heard so far it sounds good.

Graham.

Thanks Graham.

A skeletal Scherzo but not as sinister as Richter's.

Linda at her best--also a very good, if not great recording.

Haim, if my memory is correct I'm indebted to you big time for leading me to this particular (or was it the other way around?).  I was thinking a lot about this album yesterday as I was practicing the theme and two of the variations of the WoO 31.  For some reason this piece has its grip on me since the first time I heard it.  It is one of those pieces that came at a time in my life when I needed it and carries great meaning/emotion for me.

I've not said one word to my son in order to influence him either about what to like in music or not but I think he likes this work as well.  He already, on his own, found the score beside the piano and had the theme memorized about 6 months ago.  I have my work cut out for me already and it is clear that in just a year and a half he is already very near to leaving me in the dust.  On the cello that is already a forgone conclusion.

Vivaldi had a strong sense of tuneful music; performance of Savalls shows it extraordinary well.

Highly recommended.

Picked this record up at our local monthly record show (50+ individual dealers).  It's a mono copy of the Elmo Hope Trio's "Here's Hope" (1962, Celebrity 209). Sidemen are Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. It's amazing to me how many of these late 50's/early 60's jazz records were so well-recorded.  This one is exceptional -- perfect clarity, wonderful tone, incredible dynamics, and of course, brilliant music making!  If you see a copy, grab it!

Kuma, you should hear his radical 1995 record with the complete scherzi.

Tastes the Broom

The Happy Jawbone Family , taste the broom . I heard a track on Tom Ravenscroft 6 music show  "fistfull of butter "   decribed as garage blues rock whaterver that is but its really rather good if you want to hear something unusual.

I'm completely blown away by this album. Warning: contains growling vocals, blade runner atmosphere and brilliant tunes.
