What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Haim, if my memory is correct I'm indebted to you big time for leading me to this particular (or was it the other way around?).  I was thinking a lot about this album yesterday as I was practicing the theme and two of the variations of the WoO 31.  For some reason this piece has its grip on me since the first time I heard it.  It is one of those pieces that came at a time in my life when I needed it and carries great meaning/emotion for me.

I've not said one word to my son in order to influence him either about what to like in music or not but I think he likes this work as well.  He already, on his own, found the score beside the piano and had the theme memorized about 6 months ago.  I have my work cut out for me already and it is clear that in just a year and a half he is already very near to leaving me in the dust.  On the cello that is already a forgone conclusion.

Doug,

I always take great pleasure in reading your thoughts about the various compositions you come across. It looks like your son is getting ready to post his musical input on this forum as well.

If memory serves me right, I started with Ragna Schirmer's Haydn sonatas (pointed out to me by Stefan) and it is you who explored her Schumann recording. Thanks again.

EJ,

Yeah. It's supposed to be THE one to have. I haven't gotten around to it yet.

He is very good - such a tragic figure; one of those people that just couldn't be helped.  It led to a major falling out with Roberta Flack, but they had patched things up before he committed suicide.

Elton John. Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player.  On vinyl from 1973.

A band that I'm surprised doesn't seem to get more attention on this site...given their work and their origins.

The new AliaVox.

Unfortunately it's not a new CD rather an interesting project with narration; based on the previous Savall records.

Luxurious edition; really fine artwork; there  are no any  unknown tracks.
