What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Unfortunately it's not a new CD rather an interesting project with narration; based on the previous Savall records.

Luxurious edition; really fine artwork; there  are no any  unknown tracks.

Born and educated in Rotterdam, I have read Praise of Folly both in Dutch as well as parts in Latin. I'm sure the CD is more fun.

First spin of a brand new CD. Some seriously impressive Wagner singing by German tenor Jonas Kaufmann. Don't think I've heard the Wälse cries done as thrillingly as here. Both here and in Siegfried's exchange with the forest bird, it makes me long for a complete studio recording with him as (is it possible?) both Siegmund and Siegfried. And I wouldn't mind if Runnicles would be on the podium!

Cheers,

Hi Kevin,

Bit of a 'curate's egg' this, good in parts. The music is fantastic as you know, however the SQ is a bit strange. Its on the Doxy label, which is Italian I understand and I have some read some rather uncomplimentary reviews of other albums on this label. Usual stuff digital sounding, poor pressing etc.  My album does not sound too digital, and it is nice and warm sounding, but it has a strange 'bass bump' on some of the tracks, but not all? Which spoils the mood somewhat. It comes with a CD which also has the same effect, which overall makes it difficult for me to recommend it whole heartedly, but Etta' voice is so good I am inclined to forgive the pressing faults. I think it is a case of you pay's your money and you take's your choice. However, wish I could find an original copy, so guess it will have to do for the time being, better than nothing!

Regards Graham. P.S. You  still up to meet in March.

I like the reworks, very interesting.

One of my very first albums.

It is one of the classic sixties samplers.So many people must have had their first contact with the alternative sixties through this album. Dylan, Cohen and the unforgettable Roy Harper feeling 'no cleaner than a chinese wrestlers jock strap cooked in chip fat on a greasy day'. Didn't we all feel like that?

Original 60's Vinyl.

This is a very good album.

Anybody who likes Bon Iver or Fleet Foxes might be interested in this.

Kevin/Graham,

I think you'll find the Speakers Corner reissue better quality. It's about £44 on Amazon but on Pure Pleasure Records it's about £25. Pure Pleasure's own releases are well worth looking at. They're reissued full analogue. I have a few and they're very good. Here is the link to the Etta James LP on their web site;

Unfortunately not. I do have a first press of 'Etta James Rocks The House' on Chess though. This is one of my favourite Etta James albums and one of my favourite live albums period.
