What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Purim - I. Xerxes - Esther's Book - 10.000 talents of silver  -  really serious and interesting story. At the time of Renaissance the tradition was going on too; so some really early tunes appears on the CD.

Music is very good; voice of ladies - outstanding.

Highly recommended.

Pretty good timing, Chords, since the Purim holiday is just around the corner.

"While best known as a master of the organ and of the polyphonic Cantata, the great Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) also left us a number of Spiritual Concerts for soloists and instrumental ensemble. For this recital, Hans-Jrg Mammel has selected works from this repertoire, including amazing vocal chaconnes which bear the undisputed signature of the great composer the young Bach so much admired."

Highly recommended

Karajan's second Tosca was a prestige project for DG, which critically never got the recognition it deserved. This performance resolves around Scarpia, whom Ruggero Raimondi presents as a true sleazebag, inflected in ways that would be too subtle in the opera house but work well on record. Ricciarelli, a light voiced Tosca, and Carreras are excellent if more conventional (in terms of performance; at this stage of his career, Carreras had the most beautiful voice on the planet), and recording quality is exceptional. Not to be missed as first or nth performance of this flawed but effective work!

Cheers,

EJ

Hi Paul, Just about to post this. One of his best IMO. I am a big long standing fan.

Original Vinyl.

Paul if you have not already try and have a listen to Leonard's new album 'Old Ideas.' The man is brilliant.
