What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

LBS 83295 A ^ 1

LBS 83295 B ^ 1

This is a 1st press

Thank you, Steve.

Mine is a later pressing A/B-1G.  I also have a 1st pressing  of Split.

LBS 83401 A-1U/B-1U in mint condition.

Thanks, again.

A great album too. My favourite GH album is Blues Obituary. Scratching The Surface would have been great but for Mike Batts awful production, something Tony McPhee told me he's always regretted (a bit of name dropping).

THUMPERMONKEY LIVES! - We Bake Our Bread Beneath Her Holy Fire

First play on CD. This has really impressed and is going to be played throughout 2013. In fact I might see the band on Thu 10 Jan at The Buffalo Bar, London. Steve Davis reckons they are mustard 'live' and that sounds interesting enough for me

A Description...

This album, these six epic songs, have ideas way beyond their station: huge depth, big sound, immaculate arrangements, and a big, big voice. It's a lot of things, and greater than the sum of its parts: unashamed proper prog, lifted, by an avant sensibility, out of cheesy traps, yet swapping the harsher elements of experimental and avant rock for something more melodic, for refined guitars and real singing. Main man Michael Woodman's downright classy voice is like a polished Peter Hammill, all power and in tune and spot-on vibrato. That fine voice is delivering twisted, complex melodies and equally twisted, happily ambiguous lyrics, the combination is thrilling.

EJ, good idea.  I'm going to join you with listening to Anna Vinnitskaya this morning.  As luck would have it too, I've been updating and resorting my music library over the holidays and just happen to be in the R section of the French composers so this was easy to find for a change.

Vinnitskaya, for me, is a rare gem.  She pulls me directly right into the music that I quickly lose all sense of time and where I am.  Not every musician can do this and that is why she is on my A list.  There are many stronger players technically that have absolutely no soul but can impress mightily in the superficial aspects such as virtuosity and note perfect performance.  I'll take musicality over a marketed, mechanical package any day.

Best Regards,

Doug

Georgie Fame 20 beat classics  Vinyl.

"Groovy Baby "  This is seriously cool album. Including 'Yeh Yeh', 'Get Away', 'Sunny' and 'Sitting In The Park'. All of the music contained here is brilliant jazz-inflected 60s r&b played in a decade  when Georgie was one of the mods' favourites.I thoroughly recommend this brilliant value-for-money compilation to everyone.Currently available on Amazon, the CD is £3.26 used or £4.99 for a used vinyl copy.
