What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Another very nice choice Aleg! The round peg in a square hole works for me although this works for me better even though it is the same thing. Sort of like the difference between just "playing the notes" and playing the notes. One is OK to look at (if you don't have it side by side to compare with the real thing). Without this you might not know what your are missing...
I'm trying hard to get into this -
...and now this excellent recording. Mr Waits and Ms. Gayle go rather well together -
Steve Wilsons latest.
I was a **little** concerned that the hype and wait may have been a bit much.
It is an absolute masterpiece.
Also a master class in engineering and production.
more funny music i can't dance too...
Cyril Snear - Fluent In Seven Types Of Monotone
Book of the Week on R4. Orwell on pleasuredomes, and on tourism and the English character. Very enjoyable.
Chris
It's very good Chris - the guy reading it is very good too. I loved the one about the life of a book reviewer.
Part 7 in this beautiful, but slowly evolving series by Matthias Goerne and different pianists. This new album, recorded January 2012 with Andreas Haefliger, partly replicates Goerne's first Schubert album, 15 years ago, with the same pianist.
Goerne's approach hasn't fundamentally changed - he is overtly emphatic, employs a wide dynamic range and likes extreme tempo changes - but overall prefers them on the slow side. His voice has toughened up somewhat over the years, but he still has that distinctive soft core.
Cheers,
EJ
Laura Nyro's 1968 second album on original vinyl.

Lovely album Graham. I can see we were both influenced by those CBS samplers in our youth.

Indeed Steve,
Also enjoy 'New York Tenderberry'. An underrated singer songwriter IMO.
Regards Graham.

+1 Christmas & The Beads Of Sweat is even better IMHO. Don't have her first album, though. Must rectify that.

Graham,
Laura Nyro was a great songwriter. She wrote 'And When I Die' on the Blood, Sweat & Tears album you were playing a few days ago.

This must be my most played album ever:
Dark Tranquillity - Fiction
Melodic death metal with one of the best growling vocals, beautiful melodies and brilliant and deep lyrics. Best band in the Goteborg scene..

..thanks for putting this one - a pleasant surprise.
Irish folk tunes from the 17th century onwards, by instrumental band Les Witches and Diobhan Armstrong on Irish harp. A new Alpha cross-over production, great for the late evening.
Cheers,

Haim,
thank you again for that Monteverdi (-based) record; spreads among friends; many of them are purchasing the original CD.

Glad you liked it. The disc has been playing in my car for three days in a row.
Chopin's sonatas, a prelude to another snow storm.
New purchase on vinyl. Very good on first listen.
