What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.IX)

With 2013 upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Barbirolli/Halle Orhcestra: Sibelius Pohjola's Daughter
It feels a tad reserved. I see that the Bernard Herrmann got an idea for Phycho shower scene  soundtrack from this.

Valse Triste is nice, however.

Listened to Hough's b-minor several times over the last few days... technically very good, but just a bit too reserved for my taste. He fails to make the b-minor come alive.

Bleak stuff - DSCH at the top of his game from the first quartet onwards! Continuing with quartets 3 and 4.

P.S. My four year old doesn't enjoy it as much as I do. Not for everybody, then

Excellent works and performances of one of music's less well known champions. If there is a composer to compare with Röntgen, it must be Rubinstein. Both composers wrote music inspired by the high romantics (Brahms, Tchaikovsky), but of variable quality, ranging from the forgettable to the inspired. For both, redemption and immortality rests in a few really good works, and for Röntgen, that included his first violin concerto.

Cheers,

EJ

Original vinyl Saga 1969. British blues with Peter Green as guest.

It's good Graham. You should be able to get it on CD.

Strauss' four last songs and two extracts from his operas, including a thrilling finale to Salome. Nina Stemme, at the peak of her powers at the time of this recording, has plenty of vocal beauty and power.

I was recently able to get hold of this original copy recorded in 1968.  Surprisingly nice music.  Had to light joss sticks to really enjoy it though.

Yes Howard. The group is mainly based around Bob Brunning and Bob Hall. I have 3 of their albums. I think this one is the best.

I hope you enjoy it Graham.

Don,

That is one valuable record worth about £300 in mint condition. Is it on the Head label? I have their most famous album 'Jug Of Love' which is highly sought after and is worth over £600. If I remember correctly this was reissued on vinyl by MOV fairly recently. It's a very laid back LP showcasing the guitar work of Martin Stone.
