Network Hell..P.........please?
Posted by: GraemeH on 02 January 2013
The joys of the Virgin Media 'SuperHub' are giving me hell in trying to get my home network to recognise the HDX on the main PC via desktop client.
As the Virgin modem has almost no wireless capability I have connected my Belkin Router to it and my PC as follows:
1. White broadband cable from wall to Virgin Modem
2. Yellow cable from Virgin Modem to Belkin Router
3. Grey cable from Belkin Router to back of PC where green light flickers
4. Cat6 cable from Virgin Modem to HDX
With regard to 4: This is the only way the HDX connects to the internet. I have tried taking the Cat6 from the output socket of the Belkin Router and nada - and yes, the HDX MAC address is logged into the Belkin but the HDX does not connect to the internet on boot-up nor does the main (only) PC's desktop client find the HDX in this configuration.
The HDX is not found by the desktop client and so I'm unable to create a back-up NAS.
Not sure what the hell is going on and it's driving me nuts - Nserve works fine from iPod.
Thanks for any advice.
Graeme
That is the point of using the Apple Router with the super hub in modem only mode (as advised by Naim). All wired and wireless functionality is taken over by the Apple router not the super hub.

I read Bart as suggesting wired function to HDX remains with Superhub - no?

I was proposing something else -- namely keeping the super hub as the home router (turning off only wifi) and using the airport extreme only as a wireless access point, for its excellent wifi signal.
Could do this either way so long as only one of the devices is in 'router mode.'
The super hub is best used as a modem only as advised. In this configuration only one port is available - the yellow one, which is connected to the Airport Extreme Base Station WAN port. The Apple device is NOT used in Bridge Mode as it provides DHCP and NAT and all devices wired or wireless are served by it and not the super hub which is reduced to 'dumb' modem only.

Confusion here I Think between modem only and disengaging wifi but I think I have the gist. Thanks chaps. G
get a real modem and a legit router

Have overcome this exact problem with another customer's HDX-SSD when he changed to Virgin and had a SuperHub installed. All resolved by switching SuperHub to modem only mode and installing a NetGear cable router to do EVERYTHING else (wifi, switching, routing, etc.). You will end up by taking an Ethernet link from the SuperHub to the new router and then connect HDX, computer, NAS, wifi, etc. to this. You will need to switch off the wifi in the SuperHub too.
Took less than an hour to do the change & have have had no reports of any issues for well over 6 weeks now.
This problem is known to Naim - and to Virgin!!! But don't ask me what the problem is due to, but you should be able to sort it as described above.
Good luck.

OK, I'm up and ready for the fray....First I'll try Virgin Superhub modem only and a factory reset of the Belkin to see if I can use that as the wireless and wired connection as the problem seems to stem from there in that the rear port connection from the Belkin to HDX presently draws a blank.
Thanks for you help again. G
3 hours later and success. With the Superhub in modem only I eventually managed to get the Belkin to work as a network access..I can now 'see' the desktop client on the main pc and ha e managed to regain wifi after hours of head scratching.
Hopefully the HDX will connect to the internet ok after a reboot.....fingers crossed. G

Hoping it works for you Graeme
The reason I have stayed steadfastly to the Mac n DAC route is because of all these potential issues

my experience too.
however, i do not recall having to switch off wifi in the superhub, nor do i recall instructions from virgin to that effect. can you expand on this a little, Tony?

Thanks again to all who helped out...your work here is done! G

Good news!
Excellent! Happy listening and don't fiddle with it again

Now to the task of backing up the HDX. Presumably I attach the NAS to the Router ......Any particular type more reliable in folks experience?. G
PS I didn't fiddle with it, honest.

G, lots written here about nas's. I use a Synology 212j with 2 2tb WD "red" drives, and it's been easy for me to figure out and flawless. I'd say it was harder to navigate the Windows-based DTC to set up the backups than it was to set up the nas But read the forum as there are some other brands recommended including Qnap.
The basic scheme is to do a wired ethernet connection from the nas to one of the open ports on that Belkin router. Once the nas is all set up and updated (it'll want to update itself online), and you've learned how to add folders (I made one called uServe backup), you'll use the DTC to set up automated backups from the HDX to that folder. The default is for daily, incremental (only new stuff and changed stuff) backups at something like 04:00 hrs. That's how I let it do its thing.
Then I also backup the nas to an external usb hard drive. The nas also has a backup utility that is automated to run every evening as well.
Thanks Bart, that's helpful. I'll read the manual to be sure I think I know what I'm doing......tomorrows task. G

Ken,
My take on it would be to remove the SuperHub from all routing tasks including wifi to save conflicts, firewall issues, etc. It made sense to me to have one router controlling the wired and wifi networks, whilst the SuperHub simply acts as a modem feeding the Internet connection into the cable router.
Also saves customers wifi devices trying to switch between networks.
Ironically, have been running a similar configuration at home with the ubiquitous BT HH2 and am using it as a modem, with all network duties being carried out by a Belkin cable router. Have been running things like this for over three years now, first with Uniti, now with SuperUniti (and ReadyNAS). Rarely have any issues that a quick power cycle of one or two products doesn't resolve.
Seems OP has found the solution without too much hassle, but I ask the age old question, "Having bought an HDX, where is his dealer in all of this?"... but there in will lie a can of worms.
And, as you say, ENJOY :-)

Just for the record I'd like to state that I purchased the HDX some months ago at a distance from TomTom as a special and James could not have been more helpful and responsible. He outlined the issues I might face and I agreed to take entire responsibility.
He helped me establish an initial connection with my hokey modem/router over the phone well after normal business hours and it was only my recent attempt to add a NAS which highlighted the problem above Months later.
I'm very grateful for the support I've had on here to sort out what was entirely my own responsibility and lack of know how.

Graeme,
Fair comment and I fully agree, James is a great guy. Knew a can of worms would open up - should have held fire on typing that last sentence. Had simply assumed your HDX was new and you were reliant on the forum. End of story.
But then again, the SuperHub HDX customer I referred to has had his server for a couple of years now. Once I had visited his house to investigate (FOC & after hours), we found the root of the problem causing his HDX to pause for no reason. He then agreed to pay for my time the following evening and for a new cable router too, as he has little or no computer network experience himself. So, different experiences, same end result.
Trust that balances things? Apologies otherwise.

Just to add to this...I have been having problems with n-stream since I received my NDS. Basically kept losing connection to server whenever closed the app and always had to manually connect, auto connect never worked. Dealer advised problem was probably the Virgin Superhub.
I have now added an AIrport Extreme router between the switch and Superhub and put the Superhub into modem only mode. Now works without a hitch every time and for the first time I can use auto connect. Whilst the router range is similar to the Superhub, connection and response times are much improved. Very happy!
