Internet Radio Streaming

Posted by: sheffieldgraham on 04 January 2013

I have been streaming Radio Paradise into my system( see proflie) through my MacBoookPro/HiFace/nDAC at 128K.

The results have been very good.

Recently I downloaded the mobile app. for Radio Parasdise and streamed it through my nDAC using the Apple USB lead mounted in a home made docking base at 128k.

It’s a cheap source compared to a dedicated player; so easy and convenient too.

The SQ isn’t quite up to the MacBook approach,  but it’s fine for casual listening and the artwork and info displayed is very handy for  noting “newly” discovered artists.

Does anyone else use this facility through their system and if so what are your opinions.

I’ve also downloaded the Magic.co.uk radio station mobile app.

LOL

Already got the album. Just happened to be playing when I took the shot.

Lots of other interesting stuff though.

The Naim dac is 'iPhone compatible' and so connecting the iPhone will bypass its internal, low-quality dac circuitry.  That's at least a start towards good reproduction!

The main RP web site has a 192k feed - why not try using that through the MacBook? Not sure what the mobile options are.

When the Naim iRadio enabled devices get older it would be worth buying one S/H just for the Naim only 320k RP feed which sounds very good indeed.

The main RP web site does have a192k feed , but it's MP3 format. 192k is available on Ogg Vorbis, but not sure it's accessible on the Mac. It also has some glitches with some players. I use 128k through i-Tunes or the Real player. The mobile options are 32,64,128k.

No need to wait for Naim iRadio. Go to Shoutcast web site and tap Naim in the search box!

Hi Graham, I have recently discovered the Mac Book Pro route in streaming iRadio and found the quality of the USB approach depends to a large extent on the USB-SPDIF conversion. I have no experience with the HF but have read good things about it. Have you tried Pure Music via its Playthrough mode? PM uses the iTunes interface and the Radio on iTunes also goes through the PM software. Ive tried listening to iTunes bare and iTunes through PM and the latter sounds much better! Only problem is the PM Playthrough Mode sometimes loses its connection and requires a refresh to get going again. Apart from this occasional glitch, it's worth giving it a try. PM has a free trial which you candownload.

Thanks for the tip. The Naim RP exclusive is playing through i-Tunes. The info displays sample rate 44.1kHz, format AAC, but Bit rate unknown. Is there anyway of veryfing if it's 320k.

Thanks for that, will investigate.

On the SU, I seem to get 320 by default with RP. Is this what we are talking about here with Naim devices? Best Regards, Russ

I have just done some experiments with the NAIM link from Shoutcast. Real Player says various rates from 300 to 650 KBPS.

Mind you it doesn't seem to sound any better than the 192 feed from the Radio Paradise link on their website, but that is surprisingly good IMO.

I believe it is 320k and is supposedly exclusive to Naim internet radio receiver/players. It is actually entitled "Radio Paradise-Naim Exclusive" on the Shoutcast web site.

We've just got into the modern internet radio malarkey, with a Roberts iStream radio - so hardly Naim quality, but great fun nonetheless.

Welcome to the club m'lord.

Ive been using a Roberts colour stream for last couple of years.

Great product IMO.

Check your I stream to see if it is using latest software a I got a mail for new software and updated just a couple of weeks ago.

Interestingly the colour stream sounds very good with its solid wood case, and I also use it to access all the music from the HDX.

Enjoy

The Roberts does not appear to have an ethernet input socket - are there any similar products that do accept a wired connection.

I use a Revo K2 in the bedroom. That accepts wired Ethernet. Whether it would suit you in other ways I don't know. They can certainly be found for less than the list price if you look around.

Thank you for the pointer to the Revo product.

Difficult question but how does the sound compare to other portable radios, looking at the pictures it should have an adequate sound as opposed to a squeaky tinny sound.

Paul - I cannot tell you how many times I think something, only to find out you have already written in the same thought already.  Happens at least once a week.

If I were you, I would be afraid...very afraid - lol

Maybe it's just a time zone thing.

If you think the same as I do, then you must have a sick mind !

I guess you couldn't call it an 'audiophile' product, but it certainly isn't tinny and can achiev a fair volume. There's a refurb unit in the revo sale for almost half-price. It also has decent connectivity and has an optical digital-out,

My Roberts colour stream radio has a LAN connection on rear panel as well as USB connection, apple dock, etc
