I will start with this:

Couple of my faves:- Goodbye Cream(not all live)

Jimi Hendrix.Band of Gypsys.

Band of Gypsys is awesome. Best-ever electric guitar playing by anyone on Machine Gun too.

I also like Band of Gypsys and I have the 1st press vinyl but it's not the best recording in the world, probably worse than Zeps TSRTS which I also still enjoy despite the relatively poor SQ.

Steve

Just last week I found an original "Puppet" cover of this one on Track Records.  I was hoping to give it a clean later today and give it a listen.

Hard to choose a favourite live album, so many great ones, and many memorable bootlegs, especially from my school days, particularly from the Grateful Dead.

Many of my favourites have already been mentioned, but one hasn't so far.  Like them or loathe them, Supertramp were at their peak when they played live in Paris in November 1979, and who could forget the brooding opening, the countdown and then explosive start to School.

+1 for Van's "Too late to stop now"

+1 (I think I unconsciously censored myself about this one...)

Cheers Richard for those recommendations.  Tom Petty and Clapton/Winwood duly ordered.

This is ,, out of the two or three live albums i own  my favourite.

I do have  a loft full of bootleg live cassette tapes nearly all recorded badly on a sony walkman with the odd mixing desk recording. showing my age i admit.

Where did you find the Hendrix LP Richard? I hope you're not going to say it was one of those charity shop deals.

Superb, definately one of my top 3 albums of 2012.

Posted on: 07 January 2013 by Richard Dane

Steve, it's on loan/approval along with some other LPs.  I'm going to give it a clean and play to see what condition it's in first.

To OP - fab thread!

For me it is this one. The band at the top of their powers:

King Crimson The Great Deceiver: Live 1973 - 1974 album cover

As I once said to the percussionist on these recordings, at least one disc from this set has been in my CD player almost every day since I bought it.

For me it would have to be Pink Floyd's Deicate Sound Of Thunder because it features (to these ears), Dave Gilmour's finest live guitar solo during Comfortably Numb.

Can someone please explain to my why at least 50% of the above are classified as live albums when they're either studio albums with crowds added in or live performances severely doctored/butchered to make them palatable. Now, James Brown Live At The Apollo? How can a thread go this far without that? FWIW - Sam Cooke Live At The Harlem Square Club 1963. THAT'S a LIVE album!!!

Probably because 99% of the people don't know and probably wouldn't care anyway.

Because it's a corker of an album that covers most of his career.

The best live album by a band that never hit the UK charts, Maze at their very best.

Remember going to see them in concert in (I think) the early 1980s at Hammy Odeon, Maze. Great live band with a big following.

Saw them on this tour. Great album.

Not sure if this album has already been mentioned. It is rather good!  It's a rare album that can cause people who love Sam's music to radically reassess a major artist. THIS IS SUCH AN ALBUM.

Eight posts back by me. It's like no other Sam Cooke and unlike most live albums here it is absolutely live and out there flaws and all. The female audience occasionally sound feral.
