Cd storage

Posted by: tonaimbutafew on 06 January 2013

Hello all,

We currently have lots of ikea billy bookcases for CDs DVDs etc but they take. Up too much space. We have just acquired over 500 albums if not more so want some new storage. Can anyone suggest somewhere really good at utilising as much space as possible for cd storage.

Many thanks

Remove the jewel cases and put the CDs in cardboard sleeves. You can buy these at Covers 33 online. The CDs will then take up much less room.

I can't believe your listening to CDs when you have the new LP12.

If you're planning to sleeve them, best is to use Tyvek sleeves - Tyvek is softer than normal paper or cardboard (less risk of scratches), totally acid free (unlike some paper sleeves), does not leave residuals on the discs and is virtually indestructible. I use them inside pp sleeves sourced from J-loft, which allows artwork as well.

Cheers,

I like the cd cases an having them on show so want to keep it like that. Don't worry the lp12 still had a good listen over the weekend. I'm not into streaming so cd an vinyl is my preferred source. Just have to go through all these CDs to see which ones to keep or get rid of.

Thinking again over whether to keep CD's at all. Choice is

1) keep them in a caselogic type wallet (along with their covers / booklets); or

2) create second back-up of files online and dispose of the lot

It feels like the second would be the way forward if it wasn't for losing the artwork apart from the digital cover image stored in the file folders.

Mark,

Don't forget the legal issue of music ownership. If you dispose of the CD's you no longer have the right to any ripped copy

CDs themselves are under the house in the crawl space.

Thanks, I had not thought about that at all. Perhaps with the subconscious assumption proof of purchase where available would suffice.

Does anyone use caselogic know if they are good for the booklet / front cover and the rear cover art all in one slot?

Jazz Loft also do plastic sleeves. They hold the booklet and back paper work.

See Jazz Loft space saving cd sleeves, or:-

They look pretty good. Have you compared with caselogic type wallets for ease of use? My only thought is they will still need a storage box anyway but otherwise more faithful to the original format.

I think you gotta remember basic physics. If you are not going to throw out the cases the CDs will take up the same amount of space no matter what.  I have a strange feeling if you throw out a cd and keep the rip you will be ok.

Mark, I have only used the J Loft sleeves.  Obviously they still need to be stored, and visbilty of the spines is very limited, so  collection software is very useful.

I had 5 Ikea billy cd towers and managed to reduce CDs to 2 of them.

I removed all CDs from display and boxed them up when I went to streaming. My better half complained that she missed touching the cases, browsing the inlays and spinning the CDs. Made a new shelf (holds about 2000 in cases) and bought a new CDP (transport only). She now wants to make a snug with books everywhere! CDs to be boxed again and Neat Motives to be sold! Neat Iotas to be purchased to go into the new shelving. All change!!

LOL that is what I thought. Must also say badlyread is being very accommodating. Has she even considered the optimum listening position within her requirements??

Have a look at what Argos have to offer, maybe something will take your fancy:

The above CD storage unit in oak 'effect' is £79.99

Last year i purchased 3 very tall slim units (image below) that can be cunningly placed next to tall furniture so-as not to look too imposing. £19.99 each.

Available in many different finish effects: walnut, oak, black ash, white, beech.

The flat packs can be heavy so consider delivery option, but they are very easy to build.

Lots of other cd storage units to see on the Argos web site:

Hope this is helpful

A small sample of what I do to my CDs: these are jazz loft sleeves that can house the full contents of jewel cases but that's not how I use them: I scan the contents of boxes, any size, and print inserts j-loft size. The CDs are in envelopes inside the sleeves. This makes them approx 4 times thinner than jewel cases.

The original cases with booklets etc are in cardboard boxes on the attic. A lot of work, but looks extremely cool!

Cheers,

There was a similar thread on here last year which helped me on a solution. Fleecepack CD covers are available from the store mentioned in one of the posts above, and they are able to store the front and back CD covers as well as protecting the CD itself in a fleece pocket, meaning no degradation to the CD caused by the materials surrounding it.

I simply did not have the room for all the CD's I seem to now be purchasing and needed a solution to pack the CD's away in a safe but easy way, whilst still allowing me to have access to the inlays and booklets.

I certainly seem to be increasing my CD purchase rate since I have started streaming!

Hi Chris, I agree that fleecepacks are useful and look good, but a word of warning: the ones I used (which were actually branded as  'fleecepack')  had a habit of leaving tiny, permanent, marks on my CDs, They are visible when held up to a lamp. Furthermore, the fleece started to stick to the discs in some cases. None of this seemed to affect performance but that was my own reason to start looking for alternatives. YMMV.

Cheers,

EJ

Hello all, No plans to rip the music I'm loving cd playback an having them all on show on shelves. Currently have billy bookcase towers but want something better that allows the CDs to run horizontal. We have about 1500 plus albums an rising so empty space for more is essential.

I'm struggling to figure out what to do with about 400 cd's.  They are all ripped to my UnitiServe, which is then backed up multiple times.  I suppose just putting them in large boxes in the basement is best.  I hope that I shall never re-rip them, and suspect that if I threw them out I'd never miss them.  Storage space is at a premium, but I should err on the side of caution and keep them I guess.

I could remove them from the plastic jewel cases, but honestly can't be bothered!

Thanks for the tip off EJ. I have the same ones, 'Fleecepack' brand from NL.

Ive had them packed up for 6 months so far, just checked the oldest ones and so far no signs of any degradation in the fleece / marking the CD's.

Ill keep my eye on this point though.

Im keeping them 'just in case', even though with my Unitiserve / Uniti I rarely play CD's these days.

Removing the inners from the jewel cases was tedious, I can see why you cant be bothered Bart!

I use Soundstyle Cd racks, they rotate thru 360 degrees so take up a very small footprint. Each unit holds 250 CDs No longer made but come up from time to time on flea bay. Also google the Greenapple website, they do several styles of CD storage units all in glass. Not cheap but they look good.
