Dry Month
Posted by: Calum F on 07 January 2013
Is anyone else doing "Dry Month" i.e. no alcohol in January ? I have not had any since 1st Jan. and now the first weekend is over think I can do it. Not giving up completely but hoping to make some permanent changes to cut down after this month.
No. It is wrong.
Calum,
I'm doing it. Didn't realise it was wrong however...

My wife wants me to do it.
oops...
Please don't anyone mention 'detox'. Pseudoscientific nonsense.
Research-validated questions used to screen for alcohol problems include 'Has anyone ever told you to cut down on your drinking?' and 'Do you ever feel guilty about the amount you drink?'
I guess if you are answering those positively then it might be worth thinking about it, but maybe not just for a month.

When I was working I did lead a somewhat boozy lifestyle. My wife and I would empty a bottle of wine every day and most evenings I would treat myself to a very large glass of malt whisky. Also being involved in purchasing, I spent a lot of lunchtimes in pubs dealing with sales people.
Today I lead a much less boozy existence. I limit myself to just one glass of wine at dinner and the whisky is only drunk once or twice a week. I tend to keep Tuesdays free of alcohol in order to give the liver a period of recovery. I suppose it is just a case of looking after yourself better as you get older.

We did the alcohol-free January thing for a few years but it made me miserable. I now don't drink from Monday to Friday which I find is a better option. As I've got older my tolerance for alcohol's decreased & if I drink excessively (anything over a bottle of wine in a day) I feel pretty lousy the next day.
I drink very sparingly which usually consists of a glass of wine with a meal at the weekends. I do enjoy a drink and will have more on special occasions but I hate feeling hung over which is enough of a deterrent. Another deterrent for me is that I lost a younger sister to alcohol abuse, such a waste.
We now have to have 1 or 2 alcohol drinking days such is the changes in our lives. A small beer or a couple of glasses of wine with a meal at the weekend maybe. Vintage, dryish cider has made an appearance recently, which makes a refreshing change.

Yes, Vintage Dry Cider, cold and refreshing but also strong. Last stuff I had was Herefordshire from Waitrose, ABV = 7.3%

We usually get the Sainsbury's English Vintage Med-Dry, 7.2 % around £2 a bottle.
We'll try the Waitrose next time we are there.
When I go home to Devon I often bring back some local farmhouse cider. Very refreshing in the summer with a lemonade top.
A thread that starts off about not drinking ends up being one about drinking.
I like that.
My wife and I thought it seemed like it should be something we should do.
last Friday night wasn't easy, and that was just after a short week back at work.
Heaven help us this Friday after a 5 day week!
I keep misreading this thread's title as Dry Mouth.
I'm doing without alcohol for January, but not from an anti alcohol stance, just that I am cutting right down on carbs for a while.
I don't tend to drink that much anyway, and can can go weeks without any alcohol without even noticing, so not much change.
Strangely enough I ended up buying far more alcohol than usual in my weekly shop last night, as I took advantage of some of the post festive deals!!
