n-stream bug with eponymous song titles?

Posted by: sjbabbey on 07 January 2013

I am using n-stream 3.2 on an i-pad 2 to stream music from WD NAS drives through my ND5XS using Twonky. Since updating from n-stream 3.1 to 3.2, I noticed that a few of my tracks showed up blank on the Artist/Album view i.e. they were there but only the track number showed up without the track name. If I added the track to a play queue, the name did appear in the queue and would show up on the 'now playing' screen. The missing "nameless" tracks all had one thing in common i.e. they had the same/similar title to the artist's name e.g. Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath, Bad Company by Bad Company and Free Me by Free and a Buddy Holly interview track by Buddy Holly. The problem doesn't effect album title tracks unless they have the same/similar name as the artist. I've checked the Twonky web page media browser for the NAS drives and the track names show up there on the Artist/Album section so I don't think it's an issue with Twonky or the NAS drives.

Has anyone else had the same issue?

I should have mentioned that I've also tried deleting and reinstalling n-stream 3.2 on my i=pad but the problem remains.

I noticed the same bug two days ago.  Another example: when playing The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, tracks 5 (Bob Dylan's Blues) and 8 (Bob Dylan's Dream) show up blank in the track list...

I've sent an email to naim support so hopefully they'll investigate and resolve the problem in the next release. This was a particular issue for me as I used to have the composer's name as part of my classical track names and used the composer as the artist tag rather than the performer.

Have you tried deleting the cache within nstream on the ipad, may not resolve your issue but worth a try.

Hi Sean

Just tried your suggestion but it made no difference. I didn't expect it to since all non-artist type track titles are being picked up OK and the missing track titles are showing up when selected for a play queue and when playing. For the same reasons I haven't performed a rescan or rebuild of my NAS drives.

OK, discussed this with Phil H. The track titles work OK in UPnP compatibility mode so Phil believes that the issue is that my UPnP servers/network does not support the non-UPnP command set introduced to provide the improved browsing/playlist functionality of n-stream 3.2. Naim obviously design their sofware for compatibility with their own server hardware and it may not always function exactly the same way when used in conjunction with non-Naim UPnP hardware which is why they provide the UPnP compatibility mode. I asked whether it would be possible to make enhancements to the compatibility mode to which Phil replied that if they were adding any functionality that was within the basic UPnP capabilities then they would do so.

I much prefer to have the improved functionality over the slight incovenience of missing track titles (or slightly amended as a workaround) so will have to live with this for the time being.

I now have some new track titles e.g Bl@ck Sabbath and B0b Dylan's Dream which now show up OK.
