True UPNP streaming from a Mac? What software are you using to stream from your Mac?

I've been experimenting with various streaming programs from my MacBook Pro.  The biggest issue I have is that the ones I've tested (Audirvana, Decibel) rely on a separate iTunes Library rather than truly browsing and streaming from a UPNP server directly. Pure Music seems to work the same way.

I'd like to avoid using iTunes directly given the problem of multiple iTunes libraries and the need to convert everything from FLAC to ALAC.  I'm using VortexBox, which can automatically make a copy of the FLAC to ALAC, but still would like to avoid redundancy and all that extra storage space.

Any ideas?

Are you looking for a UPnP client for OS X ... if so try XBMC?

However, Decibel should be able to play FLACs from anywhere as long as it can get to them ... it doesn't require iTunes although it will play things in the iTunes library ... so a bit confused.

I don't experience any problems with iTunes as a file manager so haven't encountered the problem you are trying to solve.

Thanks Guido - exactly. XMBP looks as if it might do the trick. Though, consensus seems to be that Audirvana, PureMusic, etc. improve sound quality.  However - with my older MacBook, I can't use them in "direct" mode with out clicks, which is a known issue.

Sound quality of MBP > Halide Bridge > NDAC is still not close to CD5xs > NDAC, but I guess that's to be expected.
