What is about local government ?? do they train to be impervious to fixing problems.
Has any one else got some amusing, frustrating but hopefully Monty Python’esk stories.
This morning was such an event - The local council has rock salt boxes in strategic places around the village to help us during the real problems we get with the many hills around the place
My small "close" road has a steep'ish slope out onto the main road (1/10 hill) & I have volunteered to collect & spread a bucket full or two every morning as soon as we get snow or ice.
This morning its empty, yes peeps from all over the village have been helping themselves (what a surprise) so I phoned the council & asked how to get more
"Thats chargable" sez the council man (seems we get one fill up for free)
"So what happens if the snow/ice/sub-zero lasts for a month" I ask
"My directions are 1 free fill up"
"yes you said that already, but its all gone & stolen by peeps that live in other parts of the village"
"Stolen !!!! thats a police matter, you need to call them"
Why is it hitting a small red button on a modern phone does not give you the same stress relief as slamming down one of the old phones ???

Not sure why you think the council is to blame - they did provide the rock salt as agreed in the first place.
Is it their fault if you live in a larcenous village?
What is the black market in rock salt anyway?

We are in a small village an they got rid of ours altogether as people were using them as loos or bins which is a real shame as they're were very handy. No one can get their cars out of the garages now. Grrrrr

That sounds absolutely wonderful. What a nice place it must be in the winter.

Derry why do you think I am blaming the council ????
You seems to be missing the point completely ......
Its the attitude of an individual with no sense or willingness to look for solutions. Any person with half a brain would not jump on my misuse of the "stolen" word & go into "call the cops" mode
Its just so obvious the people who have helped themselves have not stolen it, its been used by too many people in other parts of the village & maybe for their drives & not on the road, but that is not the point or issue.
I was calling for advise as in how do we fix this - simplz
The outcome was after the council dept mngr called me back & he explained that rock salt is charged for private roads & that a refill truck is doing the rounds & hopefully later today we get a refill - for free - as per the council agreement.

Well that is a pity. Plenty of bikes out here in the winter. It was -2 degrees and fog this morning on the commute. Wonderful. Very pretty and refreshing.

Was out on the bike yesterday.
Keen to know where this village is. Not only are there no cars but the council has helpfully provided yellow receptacles for the call of nature, banana skins etc.

My cul-de-sac has a slope steep enough to get frozen shit-slippery too.
For the past few winters i’ve taken it upon my own thankless task to snow shovel fresh falls of snow off the sloping part of the road. This usually works out very easy if the snow falls overnight before i get home from my night-shift to find it ‘un-trodden in’ so very easy to scoop up and remove.
But Sunday we had a heavy snow fall in the early afternoon, and my neighbours obliged in their laziness by driving their cars over it 50 times, I was awoke from my day-sleep-in by the sound of wheel spinning and engine rev noises.
It would probably be a good idea for councils to offer a free snow shovel [with a helpful picture instruction manual] and try to get people to engage with the formality of getting off their butts and joining in the fun…

Take revenge Debs.....send your cats over the fence for more Goldfish.
On a serious note however we leave our front drive + the pavement beyond untouched. The reason for this is because some years ago i was told that if you clear the snow around your property and dont do a good job, someone could slip, injure themselves and sue YOU.
Do we have any Solicitors on this M/B that can maybe clarify this???

Here in Canada, the onus is on the occupant to clear the sidewalk (that's a footpath) in front of their home or business. You get in trouble of some sort if you don't. Not sure about legal liability.
But shouldn't we be motivated to make things safe for ourselves and others, rather than just wiping our a$$es with legal paper? It drives me nuts when this notion of liability (real or imagined) makes people do dumb things.

Debs
I worked shifts more many years. Earplugs are your friends (and lazy neighbours in their cars suck).
