Spotify - superuniti

Posted by: mark c on 26 January 2013

Having just discovered spotify I spent ages trying to find out if I could stream from spotify on ipad to my superuniti , I noticed most of the posts were 12 months old so forgive me if this is common knowledge , but I stumbled on an app called music flow that gives AirPlay functionality to all your music including spotify it works really well , just thought I'd share this as I found it hard finding any info , mark

Mark, not heard of this before. I assume you mean that your iPad is streaming the music from Spotify, but then how does the app on iPad get the music from the iPad to the Superuniti if it is not connected by a lead?  I presume you would need some sort of AirPlay receiving device as well attached to the Superuniti?

I have searched the App Store to try and find out more but can only find two apps titled music flow, neither of which detail any  AirPlay functionality and are more to do with the cover flow style of album display.  Did you find this app in Apples App Store?

regards.

Yes, Apple TV for example, via optical, streaming from the iPad/iPhone, works well, but Spotify delivery is what it is.

Open Apple TV, connect to same wifi network you have running, connect optical into the Uniti and you are away. Digital lock should be achieved via input selection.

Its worth a try, it is for your ears to decide if the quality is to your liking.

Hi Jason yes the ipad is streaming straight from spotify to superuniti via the apps airplay function , the app is called musicflow and Is by a company called plutinosoft , no leads , you download for £1.99 ( well worth it in my opinion ) open the app then close it again ( so its running in the background ) open spotify and start playing a song , across the bottom is an option to go full screen when you have spotify on full screen their is an airplay option simply press and the streaming options -ie where to stream to come up , tick superunity and away you go simple as that , 10 second delay whilst it connects but it runs fine , mark

Hi dan I do intend to purchase an Apple TV soon so I will play about with that also but this app will certainly do until we get proper airplay functionality or spotify intergration , not holding my breath though , mark

Mark, Dan,

Thanks for your replies. I normally just plug my iPad into my DAC to listen to Spotify, which is a great way to listen and get the sound quality as good as it gets.  Only thing is, I tend to use Spotify to find new music and tend to try lots of different albums when I listen, but this means I'm frequently backwards and forwards to operate the iPad.  Would be nice to control it from my listening position, so I may look into this.  Not sure this would work with my HDX/nDAC though, but I'll have a look.

 Thanks.

Hi Jason , this is exactly why I was searching for a solution I enjoy the way the nstream app works and looks on the ipad , this app is probably as good as its going to get without naim or apple offering a solution , if you have any problems let me know and I'll be glad to help , mark

Spotify running on a Mac Mini wired to your network, connected optically to your DAC, and controlled using the Spot Remote app on the iPad or Touch is as good as I have found.  Squeezebox also has an app that gives you similar high-quality results.

Thanks Mark, that looks like a great app, giving upnp capability to my iPhone to stream spotify to my UniQute.

I'm going to download it now and hopefully won't be here posting about dns settings and IP addresses.

Just given it a go.

After a bit of fiddling I have it streaming to my NDX.

One problem through, the bit rate is showing as 705kb/s and the resulting sound is in mono.  This limits it's usefulness for me.

Shame as I use Sonos for Spotify and this seemed like an opportunity to free the Sonos player up for another room.

I'm getting similar figures 705  kbps which has to be wrong as Spotify's max rate is 320 kbps.

I have no indication that it is in mono and as my youngest is studying in the room at the moment I don't want to disturb her too much, but I've no indication on a cursory listen that it is mono.

It's a little clunky and hit and miss but for €2.69 is a handy addition to my "streaming" folder on iPhone and iPad and the above picture is of a downloaded Spotify playlist of the hits of 1978 as seen through n-stream app.

I have no means of trying this but the screenshot also says PCM which makes me suspect one channel of CD rate streaming. 705 is half of 1410... Is it transcoding to PCM? For those who are getting mono - left or right channel?
