Fast Forward !

Posted by: rjstaines on 30 January 2013

I'm displaying uncharacteristic patience waiting for the next release of n-stream in the hope that we see a fast forward facility. I've reverted temporarily to n-serve with its 'fast forward' capability, playing my HDX through the NDS dac, in order to compile some play lists (on my HDX).

The purists may say I don't need a fast forward - that I should listen to the whole of the track the artist laid down...  I say b*llsh1t - when you have a large(ish) library of music you need to be able to scan through it to dig out the good stuff, and I mean scan, not plod through.

But tomorrow's another day and tomorrow I may have the time to do justice to the artist's work, but today I just want to find (quickly) the music that rocks my boat.

So this is a plea to those very nice application developers in Salisbury - give us fast forward in n-stream - quick as you like!

Thanks in anticipation,

Roger.

why not just use nserve?

Because the NDS streaming music from the HDX server has the edge over the HDX playing the same files through the NDS dac, for sound quality. (This being why some of us HDX owners went on to lay out loadsa hard-earned on an NDS.)

I say it 'has the edge', but there are those who would say 'is worlds apart' - it's all a matter of degree!  But if you haven't done the comparrison yet (NDS/HDX), you shoud treat yourself.

I have returned to nServe for listening to the HDX while the NDS is back at Salisbury. I had forgotten how intuitive and slick it is to use compared to nStream.  The latter has come a long way but it's still got a way to go.

+1  Harry.

BTW what's wrong with your NDS?  (being nosey)

It has a wonky display. Sounds fantastic so I was in no rush.

On Monday the 555DR-PS arrived and is sitting in a shelf sucking amps. Didn't have the Burndy to connect it to the HDX so it is just warming up passively for now. 552PS went in the van for its DR upgrade and the head unit went with it so that they can listen to both together after the upgrade. NDS went back for a display swap or new unit. I don't care which but I'll be happy for just the display to be changed. I don't know how much product variation there is but I feel it in my waters that my NDS is a good 'un.

152 on loan. So we're now running bare HDX into 152/Flatcap/500. Very musical, very entertaining, but.....

It's been a useful reality check. Albeit in a system unlikely to be a common sight.

Now there's a combination you don't see too often Harry, a bit different to my 252/Nait which is equally rare.

I'm waiting for Nstream for Android but in the meantime I'm using Bubble upnp which can fast forward and change volume on my SU. Can't change input though...

If FF is that important to you it may be worth trying as it's free.

Roger,

On n-Stream v 3.2, the fast-forward (and reverse) slider function is active and working very well here. On an iPad it's the main slider bar in the middle of the screen. On an iPod, swiping up over the album cover will drop down a window with the slider.

Perhaps it wasn't on your copy, but the developers are very fast, now that quantum entanglement allows instantaneous updates from Naim HQ.

Now that's interesting. Is this a full release or beta? Irritatingly, I don't have a streamer to connect to at the moment. But I can wait.

Full release.

I note that the UnitiLite I'm listening to is on the 3.18 firmware. Perhaps FF is not implemented on earlier versions ?

Confirmed :

This from TJ (from here)

> Jump to position (slider control to fast forward/rewind)

Not in this release (sorry). Is on the cards and firmwmare is being developed to support this.

Ah right. Sounds familiar now.

Thanks Jan.

Yes, my original post was misguided - it's the software in the streamer that will implement FF& REV, isn't it?  So it's already working on the new UnitiLite, because it's running 3.18.

So it's firmware release 3.18 or 3.19? for NDS/NDX/ND5XS that I should have been pleading for!

I thought you could stream  to the nds overnetwork if you find the coax connection not up to standard?

Absolutely right Claus, and it's when doing this and using n-stream to control the NDS that we don't currenty have Fast Forward or reverse.  These functions will be implemented in the software on the NDS (&NDX, ND5XS), so this is the magic program code that I'm so looking forward to seeing from those nice chaps in Salisbury.

But with that setup I see no reason why you in the meantime just use n-serve, losing nothing only the rovi information in the n-stream. I may be missing something here since I have only heard and worked with the server interfaces.
