AssetUPNp to read QNAP.....& catergories

Howdy wise ones (I originally posted as a reply to another but think will start from scratch.....)

I have stepped from world of vinyl & CD to streaming and whilst have absolutely no problem with system / sound, and have music successfully stored in the QNAP it's the formatting and folders that is bugging me.

I have similar setup as others listing (QNAP > Twonky > Uniti) and have a couple of anomalies I struggle to resolve. On the QNAP I add music via an external hard-drive and music has been ripped on to hdd mostly via NServe with some ripped via normal PC (not Apple). Issues are:

(1) All albums are only able to be picked up in 'By Folder' on Uniti and can't get to search via Artist / Album / Genre etc.

(2) When song plays on Uniti it shows as 'unknown' in for both Album & Artist!

I took advice of others and downloaded Asset UPNP as seems for others this has resolved BUT (and likely due to my lack of IT skills!) can't get it to point to the NAS to pick up the music as at this time only selects existing Windows 'shared music'' - any thoughts to direct this correctly (as first port of call in endeavour to correct)??

Ultimately the main thing is that all music is picked up and plays it damn well....would be nice, however, to get full functionality sorted!

Cheers.....Lindsay

Hi Lindsay -

You have to tell Asset which folder(s) to look for music in.

Bring up the configuration window, and hit the Advanced Setting's edit button.  At the top, you will see an Add Folder button.  If you access your QNAP as a share, simply enter that pathname and hit Ok.  Asset will then scan the folder, and you will be able to access by artist, album, and so on.

Good luck!

Thanks Hook - I thought would be that easy too but the QNAP sits in 'Networlk Location' on Windows Explorer as a public file BUT when click on it there is nothing showing at all....so when steer Asset to the folder there is nothing to pick up.

Maybe I have to make the music, via the Admin tool on QNAP, Public somehow so something is seen?

On a pcyou need to map the drive you have yourmusic stored in

qnaps built in upnp is fine. Pretty much the whole purpose of a nas is you then dont need a computer. Forget asset and get the nas running right.

you dont need an external drive to copy music to it either. Do it via your computer once drives are mapped.

store your own rips in qmultimedia in a folder called music.

if the serve is ripping to the nas make sure it has its own share.

finally Raid is not backup, make sure your files are being backed up. There are lots of options in the qnap interface to achieve this.

Thanks Gary - I'll do the mapping & look to sort QNAP.

As for ripping to external drive....I'm doing this as my 'backup' as well as because a mate, who has a nServe (I don't), is doing some of his for me as well so updates as he goes on my hdd.

Thats fine. I just thought you meant you were plugging the external drive directly into the QNAP and copying over (nothing wrong with the BTW) but its usually quicker to just do it via the computer.

In Windows Explorer, if you see your music directory under Network Locations, right click on it and select Select Map Network Drive.  This will let you associate a drive letter with that network location.   You can then use that folder (beginning with the newly created drive letter) to access your music folder.  And you can tell Asset to use it as its music folder.

I prefer Asset over the QNAP's built-in Twonky server, but either can be made to work well.  Good luck.
