Weird iTunes behaviour
Posted by: winkyincanada on 02 February 2013
I'm running the latest iTunes and it is doing this weird thing. When one song finishes, it often (increasingly?) plays a second-or-so of another random song from the same album before moving to the next song. It is a bit disconcerting. Has anyone else experienced this? It has also stopped playing "gaplessley" which is usually most notable on live records.
Any clues?
Update. I just read the BitPerfect notes on this. It seems it is a bug that occurs with iTunes 11 and BitPerfect when iTunes "lies" to BitPerfect regarding the next track to be played, so BP queues the wrong track in its gapless playback buffer. BitPerfect figures it out in a second or so, but not before playing the wrong track for a little while.
Sounds like a nightmare! Maybe you should try something more reliable...like UPnP.
Sorry Winky, just couldn't resist being a dick. Hope the bug gets fixed soon.

Just drop Bit Perfect, and everything will indeed be near enough perfect not to matter! ESL 57s don't tell lies! And you could have them in you spacious surroundings Winki! You would be amazed!

Touche! I deserved that! The wheel turns full circle.

That's what I've done until there is a fix. The BitPerfect guy says it will come with the next update
I like BitPerfect for automatic hi-res rate switching I'll use it for that if I remember to when playing the tiny % of hi-res stuff I have.
Naked iTunes is really just fine for the other 99.9%.
Dear Winky,
Fortunately I have so far not found anything I want issued in hi-res. The problem is in the future for me. If hi-res takes off, I expect iTunes will be updated so it can adjust itself automatically.
Have look on the Carlton Thread for a nice recent upgrade/service!

I have been having similar problems with v1.4.4 Audirvana Plus and iTunes 11. That is the downside of mixing two software apps from different vendors who may not fully coordinate releases.
I am using an early 2008 MacBook, which cant run Mountain Lion, so will have to invest in hardware someday... Mac mini or uServe or UQ, or... ??? i plan to learn more about nServe or nStream, as alternatives to avoid such software hassles.
George, the Direct mode replay through Audirvana, on my system, is about a $1000 "Naim upgrade equivalent" which I like very much. Of course I still enjoy my music straight from iTunes, but....

Charlie, I couldn't agree more. Audirvana is more controlled, neutral and relaxing to listen too. Bare iTunes sounds very digital and forward, 'trying too hard'. I would never go back to it, but the bug described is very irritating!
I've dropped Bit Perfect again , even after their suggested setting changes I still get a regular "clicking" noise. I couldn't find a vinyl setting to un-select.

For a moment there I thought you had paid $1000 for it!
But no, I see it is $74. Not as inexpensive as $9.99 BitPerfect but hardly a budget buster...
If hi-res takes off, I expect iTunes will be updated so it can adjust itself automatically.
It is indeed strange that it can't already do it.....

Fidelia 1.2.2 (Audiofile Engineering) has been in Beta form since June 2012. When I asked why it was taking so long for the final release Audio Eng. said they were ironing out some bugs, but hoping to release by end of Jan.2013. Still waiting. I posed this question in conjunction with the compatibility of vers. 1.2.1 with i-Tunes 11. I wonder if there's a connection?

It would mean a change of philosophy as Apple seems to prefer to upsample all output to a common rate ... I don't always understand Apple's choices, but on the whole Apple products just seem to work better than most. Bringback integer mode ... Oh and HyperCard.
Hi Guy,
Can we just use Audirvana Plus to take advantage of Direct mode & Integer mode other than waiting Apple to restore it?
I just downloaded v1.4.5 of Audirvana Plus, which claims to fix bugs in syncing tracks with iTunes. So far, so good. This is the second bug-fix update in a week, which is good news - their team seems to be developing agressively. Channel D (Pure Music) does not exhibit this level of development effort. I will report back after more listening...
