For those who use streamers : how do you select what to listen to?

Posted by: Sloop John B on 06 February 2013

Probably no different to the most of you I have a "current pile" somewhere in the room and the rest of the CDs and vinyl stored in some shape or form to allow retrieval.

I may fancy some Bowie and take down heroes as I did yesterday. I may see an album mentioned in the "What are you.........." thread and say I must listen to that. Other times I just gaze at the shelves until something that appeals to current mood shows up.

How does streaming change how you choose what to listen to? Or does it? is the iPad screen a virtual shelf?

Are playlists changing how you listen to music or are they rarely used?

Also do you rip all you albums or do you select and leave ones unripped?

Do you rip full albums or leave out the track you always skip on the CD anyway?

Hi Sloop, yes iPad/iphone screen does become my virtual shelf. My listening habit has really changed, probably for the worse. I find myself flipping through ripped cd's pretty much track by track,it has becomes a bit too easy.Having said that I listen to a lot more music that I probably wouldnt be bothered to find or think about on cd.

The worse thing tho is "the missus",she has the most annoying habit of changing music mid track. Found an easy fix tho, she's a bit of a technophobe so I've deleted the iremote app from her iPad!

Playlists kept for the car on my iPod and think I'm a bit ocd  and never skip any tracks off when ripping, can always skip them on playback.

One very positive thing tho,is listening to stuff that I'm sure I wouldn't do if having to select a cd. Amazing having everything at your fingertips. Downside is listening to vinyl, although much better sq wise, such a hassle having to get up to change sides every 20 mins....streaming=music for couch potatoes!

For me personaly it is much easier to play or look for albums that otherwise would not have got played so easily, lazy maybe.

I also think it has in some ways spoilt the true listening process as it's so easy to move onto the next track or album. Progress?

I definitely listen to more music now, both quantity and variety, than I ever have. I generally listen to an album all the way through and haven’t (yet) developed the habit of jumping around too much.  Although the availability of playlists has featured prominently in various threads I have never been very excited about it.  I rarely use it beyond a few tracks and when I do it is generally to line up the next album.  However the ability to sort in various ways is really useful and I can only imagine the benefits that must bring to people with very large collections.  Album information through rovi is also useful and that in itself can set you off in a new direction.  As with Andrew I rip whole CDs – memory is very cheap.

Another benefit is the ability to have all of your music available in more than one location.  Listening in my office used to be restricted to the radio or CDs that I had brought upstairs.  That pile seemed to be even more static than the one by my (now gone) main CD player.  I now have full access to all my music and the added benefit of internet radio.  As with the silent majority, streaming just seems to work and for me makes listening very easy and enjoyable.

Sometimes by genre, sometimes by artist and sometimes by album cover...don't know why it varies but I am listening to a LOT more of my collection more often - mainly a whole album at a time.  G

I always know what I'll listen to when I get home and choose that piece usually after eating supper.

I always listen to one piece of music this way, and if an obvious follow on springs to mind, then I listen to that ...

I never track skip. A complete piece of music is only sensible if listened to right through.

I never use a playlist, but sometimes listen to a miscellany as it appears on a CD album of different pieces of music.

I ripped about 550 CDs initially, and left some pieces of music out if I did not want it to listen to. I don't always like every single piece of music that a CD contains. Sometimes the couplings are rather odd as the length of CDs equates to about one and a half LPs!

It is fantastic for me to be able to select a single short piece of music that would be a real chore to find on CD [or LP], and the result is that I am thoroughly searching right through all the recordings I have.

One thing that can be fun is to let the playing run on without remembering what is comiing next. Sometime delightful and some I am running for the stop!

It's certainly made a difference to me. I don't use playlists, so I basically listen to whole albums as I used to. The ease of scanning about through over 1300 albums and picking something is very liberating though, especially as I can nip into another room and continue the session if necessary for any reason. The 'Qute I installed in the lounge has even allowed my wife to rediscover music again.

After I had bought my Superuniti and ripped all my cd's off to NAS my listening habits changed a lot. I listen much more music than let's say a few year ago. being lazy is a thing. You don't have to look for particular cd and think twice what you want to listen to, and find it first.....just turn on your iPad and there it goes, quick, random, long time no listening cd's etc. Wonderful!! Could not have any better way to spend money

other thing is download music f.ex from Naim label HD rec and you can enjoy superquality straight away.

I did all my CDs in total - even in cases where the same track is on 2 different CDs.

I have not yet gotten around to making playlists, but I will I'm sure.  And just as most people have indicated here, I find myself listening more to albums all the way through, although I can't explain why...it's not like the CD needed to be touched once put in.

It is a nice thing to be able to think of a tune or album, pull out my iPhone, and have it playing in literally seconds.  Or put something on in the living room at low volume from my bed while I go to sleep.  Ir the opposite when I wake up, without having to even get up the audio can be brought to life with ANY of my ~900 CDs...plus I enjoy the internet radio quite a bit as well.

I've usually got an idea of what I'm going to listen to before I sit down. Otherwise I would probably wander off and do something else. There's always some menial chore to be attending to. If I get an urge for something it's very convenient and fast to punch it in on the iPad. There have been past occasions when I've spent 10 minutes or more looking for a CD on a shelf and given up. It's nice to have it all in the palm of my hand.

I ignored playlists for a long time but now use them a lot. For some albums I've got more than one play list for different moods and wants. And however much I enjoy my music there are some tracks I simply can't stand - some of them on my favourite albums. Why waste what time I have left with good hearing and air in my lungs, on stuff I don't like. I'm not talking about growers. Everything which comes into this house gets an extended try out, in the office, in the car, etc. No opportunity is missed to give everything a fair hearing and allowing it to grow.  I'm taking about the stuff I think is awful or boring. Some of it has sounded awful to me for decades. It's not going to change now.

I use the N-Stream app for my SU.... I either listen to an entire album, partial album, or I create a spontaneous playlist.... just picking tunes as I go.

When I have company over I have a fun game we play. The iPad gets passed and everyone picks a tune, and repeat. Have had hours of fun doing that.

No playlists. I just browse by album or artist as if I was flipping through CDs. I'll also fairly regularly use the search function to find something specific. I usually listen to whole albums, but occasionally I'll jump around with single tracks, where one track leads me to another. That's kind of fun.
