Which "blind"buy do you regret and which one not

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 10 February 2013

I guess we all have our "blind"buys of new music and sometimes we get dissapointed and sometimes we are positively surpised. What are your positive and negative experiences ?

I will post my experiences later...

Free at Last. The first and only Free record I've ever bought. More like Free are last.

Bought Les Nubians first album at a car boot sale. Never heard of them but looking at the cover I figured they must have talent. They do, one of my favourite albums.

To my everlasting shame, I bought Trout Mask Replica AFTER I'd heard it. Despite the quality of other potential candidates, it remains the worst album I own.

In the hope that talking about these things can be theraputic, I actually have it on both vinyl and CD. I keep them with my copies of Metal Machine Music and Ascension (John Coltrane).

Just changed my profile picture to say "shame on you" When I started listening to John Peel in the early 90’s he played a track from Trout mask replica every show as he had realised there may be some young un's out there who had never heard it before.

I remember a review said that it's the sort of album you listen to once a year but once a year it's the only album that will do, a nice summation I thought.

Once a year is still too often! I have Miles Davis album I'd rather listen to.

NEGATIVE atrocious from start to finish and without doubt the worst record I have ever had the misfortune to own .. I hated every note of it. I have no idea how somebody persauded me to buy it.

No idea why finding myself going though the new releases in a record shop one day I decided to buy this record by a band i had neve heard of ... But what a great album. I went on to buy all their albums, but this is still my favourite.

I love Trout Mask Replica and think Lick My Decals Off Baby is even better, but i knew both of them well before i bought them ... I used to hum the tunes all the time.

I love this album but it did take a lot of listening to and that was over a 25 year period!

Hopefully that is. Positive, Greg  There are some great moments on Works even if it does live up to their magnificent first four albums .... Now if you had posted Love Beach then ..... Of course, i still bought it, but .....

The best, bought on a recommendation from this 'ere forum and just superb in every way :-

The worst - based on lots of folk posting how utterly wonderful it was. Comfortably the worst album in my collection; truly awful  :-

I can say this is the only album in our collection we hate. Bought on the strength of my hearing one track on the radio, truly awful.

But on the flip side these were and remain a very pleasant experience.

  The Poems - Young America.

Maeve O'Boyle. - All My Sins.

But none of them come close to Mozart.

Yep, it is completely unlistenable, isn't it? Like nails on a chalkboard.

Worst blind buy for me Sigur Ros whatever their first much lauded album was called.

I kept hearing references to it in reviews of other music I liked, kept seeing it in lists of 'if you liked this ....then try this' etc and it seemed to tick my usual boxes. I thought it utterly dreadful.

When I were a lad, back in the 1970s, lots of my older peers (and many music papers) encouraged me to go out and buy this:

I did, and it was awful. I found it weedy, sanctimonious and I couldn't stand the guy's voice.

Since an album then was about a month's pocket money, I took it back. Fortunately the guy in our local record shop let me change it - I exchanged for something I did know ("Presence" by Led Zep I think).

Fortunately most of my blind purchases have been more successful. Too many faves to name, but this one, which I bought on the strength of the sandpaper cover (and because it was on Factory) in 1980 was perhaps the best. It's still in my Top 10:

This is throwing up some curious choices ... A few albums i like are others hates, but come on folks Pet Sounds, TMR and Grace are nowhere near as awful as Trick of the Tail or sitting through Dire Straits ... surely.

Posted on: 12 February 2013 by TWP

if you are only aloud one choice  i will swap pet sounds for this crime against music, I would still buy anything from one of scotlands finest exports but this is a real stinker .. if you havent heard it be warned .... dire straits are preferable
