Can the Squeezebox Touch play 24 bits via CoAxial?

Posted by: Louis-Andre on 12 February 2013

Hi all,

all i see is a program (digital output enhancer) which allow the SBT to play 24 bits via the USB.

my problem is that my external DAC (TeddyDac) only supports 24bits via its coaxial input(it can only play 16 bits via USB) .

if there is a program that allow the SBT to support 24 bits files via its coaxial out (not its USB out)...let me know as i dont know what to do...

otherwise, is it possible to buy a cable that would convert the USB signal from the SBT into a coaxial signal for my DAC??

thanks in advance,

Why do you need USB. Just install the mod on the Touch and use the coaxial output into the Tdac.

The coax output of the standard Touch will handle 24 bit fine, up to a maximum sample rate of 96kHz, so I don't think you need to do anything. google "stereophile logitech touch review" and you will see this confirmed.

The EDO plug-in is intended to provide audio output from the Touch via the USB socket - the stock Touch only uses the USB socket to read data from a disc drive. But it will also enable the Touch to play 24bit/192kHz from it's digital output, but you'll obviously only need it if you actually have any 24/192 material, which needs to be in FLAC format to work. Some people think that because this app turns off the audio outputs of the Touch and does a few other things, it makes the digital output sound better. Just google "EDO plug in Touch" for the authors support page.

Yes, I can confirm it will do that.

Does anybody know if the new Naim Dac/headphone amp will accept a signal from the Touch's USB socket.

You can have 24/192kHz via coax by installing an app.

Check here for more details:

No way of knowing until someone tries it out. On other sites it is reported that some DACs need a USB hub to work with the EDO mod. It only takes a couple of minutes to install, and is easily reversed, so it'll be very easy to find out when the V1 appears.

No reason why the Naim USB DAC cannot play the EDO modded Touch! I've tried the latter with several USB DACs and they all work without issues! You just need to get to Touch's Digital Output and choose your DAC which should show up there!

Thanks Likemusic an naimUnT.

According to the Naim website the DAC-V1 "Operates with computers running OSX, 10.7 and above, Windows XP, 7 and 8" I thought the SBT may not work due to the fact it uses Linux.

If it doesn't work, could a future Naim firmware upgrade make it work.

I think it's a fair bet that it'll work, possibly with a USB hub, as most other DACs are compatable. If it doesn't work I wouldn't bank on Naim sorting the issue with a firmware upgrade. Why bother? The Touch isn't in production anymore, and you can get a modest windows netbook for the same money as the Touch was, which you could stream to if you wanted, or play directly from, using a variety of players - even Logitech Media Center and the Squeezeplay plug in. Though of course the s/pdif outputs of the Touch will work regardless, 24/96 as standard, and 24/192 with the EDO plugin. But I can't see naim putting resources into supporting an unsupported mod to an obsolete product, so you'll just have to hope the USB works.

Hope you're right.

Just noticed this, "DAC-V1 can control computer playback and volume". Maybe OSX or windows is required for this function to be operational.

Why is it so important to you to use the USB output from the Touch?

I thought the Asynch input would be better than the S/PDIF.

Dunno - it says on the V1 page that it has "Zero S/PDIF Jitter design in common with the original Naim DAC" so you'd hope that the s/pdif inputs are pretty good too - and the digital outputs from the Touch are also said to be decent so who knows which would be the best way of connecting it to a Touch.

Checkout post 1239 on this thread - from the look of it someone has been testing the DAC V1 with the EDO plug in for a Touch ..

   Hi all,

sorry i was travelling the past week.  my understanding when i wrote this post, was that the SB Touch cannot play 24 bits without a software update.

I cannot find any info on the logitech site. Reading some of the posts, is it true that the SBT can play

24 bits/96kHz on its coax?

maybe that is enough for me then. Sorry guys, inwas misinformed...

The straight Squeezebox Touch plays 24/96kHz out of it's coax output for sure. They've taken a lot of stuff off their website since they stopped selling it. Checkout the stereophile review for confirmation, (or use a DAC that displays the information).
