Yeah, the driver went from thinking he's the coolest thing since Rayban Cats, to semiconscious zombie in about 0.25s. 

Must've been scary though.

Great video Tony. It reminded me of one I was involved with in the '80s on the Noel Edmonds Breakfast Show. I was working as the doctor for the event and I'm the guy in the green parka and wellies in the back of the pick up truck who nearly slips running to the driver in the last crash.

The highlight of my day was spending a lot of time talking to John Peel who was commentating.

Well, I can give it a good coat of looking at. An Apache had a much lighter 'forced' landing than that last year between Colchester and Stowmarket. It's a write-off.

It was at Santa Pod, the drag racing venue. On the left side of the track are the pits and there was no grass barrier on this side. On the other side a 10 yard grass strip separated the crowd from the track. I have quite a few gory stories from my time working there. Another time maybe.  Did you look at all the crashes on the video? The last one was the most dramatic.

The worst accident I witnessed at Santa Pod involved a Top Fuel Dragster which veered off at the start, hit the armco barrier and disintegrated sending the engine and wheels flying in the direction of the crowd. Miraculously nobody in the crowd was injured. Unfortunately the driver died and had both legs amputated in the crash. When I arrived at the scene he was obviously dead and instructed the ambulance crew to cut him out and put him in the ambulance. These guys were old ex St Johns and whilst freeing the drivers body the driver had a spinal reflex which made him sigh. This caused one of the ambulance crew to have a heart attack so I ended up in the ambulance to Kettering hospital with a legless corpse on one side and resuscitating one of my ambulance crew on the other. Bizarre.

I know. Although macabre there was a comical element to it. I've used the story at some after dinner speeches I've given and it's always gone down well (well nobody threw up!).

I was nearly injured myself when a Top Fuel Dragster blew a blower belt resulting in a fire. The driver was having problems opening the escape hatch in the roof. I was first to arrive and as I was running to the car to get him out the fuel tank exploded taking off my eyebrows and singeing my hair. Another few yards closer it would have been much worse. The driver was extracted from the car safely with a few burns. I looked pretty comical in the mirror!

One thing I don't miss from my time working there is the headaches caused by the fuel. Horrible stuff. I never got used to it.

No Nitro ,no 6000+ bhp!

I didn't realise they only raced to 1000 feet now, still doing over 300 mph though.

If you go onto YOU TUBE and in the search box type Barry Sheene Daytona crash. Happened about 25 years ago but if my memory serves me he hits the deck at about 160mph.

Tony, that crash was horrific. It seemed like a very short run off. 

Mista H, I remember Barry Sheene's accident very well. It was actually 1975, 38 years ago this year, and he was stuck on max revs at 170mph whilst testing his Suzuki for the Daytona 200. Amazingly he went on to win the 500cc World Championship over the next two years.

That it is  unbelievable , the first time I have seen it. I knew it was Scotts  death that bought in the 1000ft rule, and assumed that British had too as I thought they were the same rules.
