n serve apps do not see Uniti Serve music files, Mac OS version and direct address does

Posted by: Yeast on 18 February 2013

I have a problem and don't know if its been addressed before here on the forum.

My New Uniti serve is connected to my network via Ethernet cable. The US is about 3 weeks old. I've had to shut down the unit 3 or 4 times to get the US to eject a CD that has been stuck, or when the network seems to go out. The upnp input via my iphone and ipad seems to have been working fine unit 2 days ago.

In the last two days, I have been unable to access the 260+ albums I've already ripped to the 2 TB hard drives on the n-serve app for ipad or iPhone. It does see the US serve address however.

On the mac version of N serve and directly addressing the Userve IP address, I do see all the music files. So does my Sonos streaming system for my non Naim system.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? I need to get the apps to address the music files remotely.

Do not use any Sonos unit as a network switch; they have 2 sockets, only use one from the switch to the Sonos. Use a proper router and switch if needed.

I found that there is a new n-serve app and downloaded it for iphone and iPad and it works again! I guess I need to discard the old app.  I guess I didn't get the memo!

Is that version 2.4 or is there a newer one?

Resetting the Unitiserve, will this delete all the music files?

What do you mean by "reset"? I don't know of a reset option on the UnitiServe.

Reboot the UnitiServe:  hold down the logo on the front panel until it blinks. Let go.  It will blink for a while, then shut down.  Set the switch on the back to OFF.  Then to ON.  That's it!

Yeast, if by reset you mean reboot as Bart says, you're fine. Rebooting will certainly not delete your music files. g*d forbid !

I guess I am just not communicating all that well. The N-Stream (no N-serve) app does show the US, but no music..it just says empty. Though I stream through my Superuniti, I need to access all my music from the Unitiserve hard drives via Upnp input. I've restarted as Bart suggested and its still not showing content, although I can play files via the analogue1 input from the US connected to my nDAC and the nDAcs analogue outputs.

So, how do I get the SU to see the music files on the US 2TB drive?

The n-stream version is 3.16.00

Are the UnitiServe and the SuperUniti both connected to a proper network switch or router, as Manu mentioned ?

Yeast, I have a feeling that the way you have your stuff connected it will not work as you intend.

nStream will only work when you're using your Superuniti as a proper client of a UPnP network.  It sounds like you have your UnitiServe connected to your Naim Dac via a direct connection, and then your dac to your SuperUniti.  In this mode, nStream will not work for you because you are not using your Super Uniti as a UPnP player.  You'll have to use nServe.

Please describe exactly how everything is connected, and we can try to sort it out with you

Okay, here are my connections.

The Superuniti is connected directly to my router using an ethernet cable. This is my streamer and I was using the n-stream app successfully for the 3 months I have had it.

The Unitiserve is connected  to the network via ethernet and the same router ( actually a daisy chained expansion powered  router switch). I also have the unitiserve connected via BNC to a nDAC, and the nDac connected to the Uniti serve via analogue 1 input.

This configuration worked just fine for the 3.5 weeks I had the Unitiserve until two days ago.

The music files  from the Unitiserve can be played through the nDAC to analogue 1 with no problem, but I have to control this via my laptop and direct IP address to the server. The streaming function on the SuperUniti does not see any music files when using n-stream apps on my iphone and iPad.

I have rebooted both the US and SU several times.

As of right now, I have no streaming function and I don't know if its the SU or the US at this point. I still get radio and FM, so its only server music files missing.

To be clearer, the analogue connection works and streaming function does not.

Hi Yeast,

That's clear. I think your best option is to contact Phil Harris at Naim, who can remotely log in to your UnitiServe and see if anything is amiss there.

I give up!!!!!!!!!!

I changed ethernet cabling and removed a sonos system from the router and then rebooted everything again. All is back to normal. I cannot say it will stay that way for long, but for now I am back in business.

The funny thing is I have been using a Sonos bridge and connect for my Pass Labs/Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor M system for 1.5 months and there was no problem. It was nice because I could access the US music files as well.

I'll leave it out for now.

This may be a new topic at this point, but can one connect the SU digitally to the Digital in on a CD/DAC player in a different system or is ther going to be a grounding issue? I'm just thinking ahead

Ah, so it was the Sonos then (kudos to Manu).

The SuperUniti has a digital out and a ground lift switch, so you can connect an external DAC without causing grounding issues.
