unitiserve noise whilst ripping

Posted by: Sutton on 02 March 2013

Just got my new US and delighted. However, for certain CD rips the noise (hum) is quite pronounced, with the unit vibrating. The rips seem fine and, I suppose, it may be just a consequence that some CDs are less balanced than others. Perhaps the CD is not as centrally held by the mechanism.  Does anyone else have a similar experience? Many thanks

Yes, we have experienced tis and it doesn't seem to be an issue. It's due the whole not being central, as you say.

I get a similar effect with my HDX - some CDs rip at high speed whereas others spin at a lower speed, all of which is evident by the quite pronounced noise of the CD drive and the progress bar on the ripping progress screen.

As per Keith's reply. Some CDs are noisy and can cause our HDX to vibrate. Others are smooth as silk while being ripped. For the reason outlined and possibly due to variations if thickness and/or not being totally flat.

I really like the US. I'm sold on having the storage as part of the unit, rather than having to retrieve music over a network. Thanks for the replies.

Same here. The vibrating CD syndrome for me seems to happen (in the main) on my older CD's from the late 80's / early 90's.manufactured to so often.

But even with the vibrating CD's out of 500+ total rips (all CD's) I haven't had a CD rejected, so all's good!

Oops! A few words missing from my post. What I was trying to say was that I guess the manufacturing process for CD's has improved considerably since then, hence the lower occurrence of this issue on newer CD's.
