What’s your favourite radio show?

Posted by: osprey on 03 March 2013

I just finished listening the Chances with Wolves restream. This is a quite magnificent show, produced by East Village Radio, as zero1magazine put it:

Unlike many radio shows, which race to play the newest releases, the weekly show occupies no specific time, genre, or marketed image. Their carefully chosen selection of rare music ranges from old soul, 90s hip hop, 50s throwback, to things you can’t categorize, introducing and re-introducing artists and songs to their large underground following. The tapestry of eccentric music mixed with sound effects, samples from old films and TV, and their trademark wolf howl, make your listening experience both whimsical and haunting.

Later this morning I am going to listen another one which already kind of belongs my Sunday routines i.e. Pop – Yesterday and Day Before which is aired by YLE (the local public broadcasting company). This show concentrates as the title hints for the music from 50´s to 70´s (both domestic and international). The host, a well known local musician, had a radio program also years ago (there was a break of almost 30 years though) and what is funny the music remains the same (and still sounds good).

I am a bit curious to know if anyone else listen to specific scheduled radio programs anymore (be i or traditional radio)? If you do, please list your favourites (and the stations where they can be listened to).

'The Moral Maze' on a Saturday night or, weirdly, 'Saving Species' on a Thursday evening.  I say weirdly as It's not something I'd watch on TV or read about by choice but somehow on the radio it really works.  G

I'd recommend Radio 4's Material World to anybody interested in science. I prefer it to the BBC TV science output.

As we're in the music room I'd recommend Bells on Sunday.

Great suggestions so far - I'll have to check these. BBC seems to rule here (not hardly a surprise given their long history). How about outside UK do you have any favourite programs/shows in continental Europe or overseas?

'The Magic Carpet', Sunday evenings on RTE Lyric FM is something we discovered whilst in holiday in Eire. An eclectic and international mix of music. Very varied, almost always artists new to me.

Generally Test Match Special would be top!

I listen to Sunday Baroque every weekend. Its a four hour show and is presented in excellent fidelity on my local NPR station. There are days when the CDS3 does not get a play, but the NAT is used every day.

Over the last 4 months I have been following...

Steve Davis: Professional Snooker player, Alternative music fan Kavus Torabi: Professional Guitarist, previously in Cardiacs and now a member of Guapo and leader of the band Knifeworld Present a two hour show every Monday evening on www.phoenixfm.com (10pm -12 midnight UK). Last week & this week, the show was/has been extended to 9pm-12 midnight UK.

Steve is gradually adding previous shows to Mixcloud. This is really handy if you happen to mis the shows due to prior engagements, like tonights Steven Wilson gig @ The Royal Festival Hall. The Tim Bowness show show added last week is very good, if you like no-man & Henry Fool especially.

Mixcloud - http://www.mixcloud.com/interestingalternative/

This all started for me when Ron started his search for some obscure Prog last year.

Many thanks Ron

Broadcasting House on R4 on Sunday mornings.

Years ago when it was fairly new and was presented by Eddie Mair, I wrote enthusiastically to Eddie after a particular edition, thanking him for the perfect witty, postmodern antidote to usual guff of the news cycle. He kindly replied that he'd taken my comments on board and that he'd shown my letter to the production team. He said that together, they were all suitably chastened and that they'd all solemnly promised do their level best not to let it happen again.
