Best Guitarist (reconsidered)

Posted by: dave marshall on 04 March 2013

Hi Gang,

Been watching a few hours of Joe Bonamassa in concert, and, really, he is something special.

I know that there's all the usual suspects, Ry, Keef, Gilmore etc. but this guy is simply amazing.

As a player myself, I'm dumfounded at what he can achieve live,  so any thoughts?

Aw ra best........and somewhat humbled,

Dave.

Don't forget Randy California (of Spirit fame), given his stage name by James Marshall H, when he was only 15. Hendrix wanted to bring him to London but mom and pop said, no, Randy had to finish school first. Led Zep's 'stairway' bears more than a passing resemblance to Spirit's Taurus, written some years before. Guess who supported Spirit on their first US Tour.....On vinyl, Spirit of 76, a double, showcases Mr California's many talents, not only as a picker but as a song writer and also gifted with the voice of an angel. His solo LP, Kahuna Dreams is one of the first with samples shot through it (maybe not such a good thing with hindsight). A series of unreleased stuff on CDs is slowly appearing too. Cosmic Smile is a big favourite, it's one of those CDs with stunning SQ too. It also makes most of the 'greats' the joke they are. Treat yourselves! All IMHO.

Now this guy, he's a monster on the electric axe...

+1 for Neil Young, Richard Thompson and Derek Trucks who are all great to see live and also suggest Robert Johnson for his original style and Charlie Christian for his early electric guitar work

I'm not sure if Johnny Winter has been mentioned. He should surely must be included in the mix.

Agree with Johnny Winter - a classic Blues Rock man. I'd also add Rory Gallagher and from left field Robbie Krieger ( Doors). Listening back to all my old Doors albums recently I realised what a sweet and subtle player RK was . I was also delighted to replay the first Butts Band album ( with Jess Roden) - some wonderful guitar licks on there also ( BTW don't bother with the 2nd Butts Band album - surely a candidate for the worst record ever).

Also can't forget Joni Mitchell as a guitar pioneer - indeed I've heard mention in the past that she is considered one of the best by fellow musicians
