Latest of Howards iMac "How can I" questions

Posted by: BigH47 on 06 March 2013

It's been a while so here is the next question :-

If there is such a thing can anyone recommend an incremental B/U utility? I am looking to keep another copy of iTunes on a separate hard drive, over and above what ever goes on Time Capsule.

I do periodic copies by drag and drop, but what would be good is if I could get a utility to do this and only update the changes, to save a few hours back up time.

Free would also be good but I might run to  some pounds if really necessary.

Have a look at "Carbon Copy Cloner".. its not free but theres a 30 day full function trial to see if it meets your requirements. It handles full or incremental backups and has a schedule function to perform backups during quiet times.

Do a google search for a Mac forum, there are many out there.

They are full of fanatics who will tell you everything you will ever need to know.

I have always had an answer within 30 mins.

I had exactly that problem.  I use Folder Sync.  It is not free, but works.  It has loads of settings.  I tend to use it in a simple manual way.  By choosing source and destination, you just click on compare, it checks, then displays in colour all the differences.  You can then just do a simple source to destination Sync, or t'other way round, or both ways.

+1 for Carbon Copy Cloner because it is also useful for making an exact copy of your iMac which is bootable. So if your hard disc fails you can boot and run from it until you get a replacement. Then you can restore the image of your iMac followed by the incremental of your iTunes etc. If you get a big enough disk drive you can partition the drive to hold several copies of the same Mac in various states of change (i.e.. pre and post upgrade).

I have a drive with five partitions two for my MacBook Pro and two for my MacMini and one for my Grandson's iMac.

Pay for SuperDuper - then you can schedule the back up and it will only copy files that have changed. It will save you a lot of time if you can use a Firewire connected drive rather than a USB connection.
