Good external HD to back up music on NAS

Posted by: Sloop John B on 08 March 2013

I know this has been covered but I find it very hard to find what I need using the search facility.

I have a fair bit of music on my QNAP NAS that I wouldn't want to re-rip so I'd appreciate any advice on the best way to back this up (presumably on an external hard drive - but which one?)

thanks

I myself do not get too picky about external USB hard drives.  Mine is a Western Digital model.  You could purchase your hard drive of choice and install it into a usb enclosure if you'd like, or buy a typical off-the-shelf model.  The drive needs to be reliable, but does not run constantly -- it gets used rather infrequently which is a different sort of duty cycle than most hard drives see.

Hi Sloop,

Like Bart I am not fussy. The last two I have used have been Seagate 3TB USB 3.0 HDD for £92, latest one was delivered yesterday.

I run a script on a PC that does an incremental backup to the attached external HDD from the NAS nightly; when full I take the HDDs over to be stored by a friend as my offsite backup.

SJB: I use a QNAP NAS with two Western Digital Caviar RED 2TB hard disks running in a mirror array. This is backed up to a single WD RED  2TB hard disk connected to the QNAP via firewire, it replicates every night and just adds the new music.

A pretty solid solution but by no means perfect.

The WD RED drives seem fairly popular at the moment. I recently bought a 3TB one for backup and it seems good. I have Seagate drives in my NAS but I understand users are not as happy as they used to be with the newer Seagate drives.

Once you have ripped, tagged and backed up your CDs then there shouldn't really be a requirement to backup again. I have used smaller drives to backup certain music directories (e.g. 300GB) and then store off-site. I only backup directories that change regularly in the knowledge that my music collection is already safely backed up.

You need to be fussy with Qnap because not all USB drives are recognised on their devices. For instance I have a WD 2TB jobbie, simply not spotted by my TS410.

Obviously check the website. Or get another QNAP and you can sync the two, of set up FTP to another drive on the network, or set up RYSNC to another drive on the network (attached to your router perhaps)

There are many many options.

My Qnap TS439 Pro II recognises both my WD 2TB drive fine.

Thats excellent, well done.

mine does not and its a recongnised issue on the forum. they do provide somewhere a list of internal and external compatible drives.

they don't all work, take my word for it.
